Caps likely to draft best player available

03:16 PM ET 06.17 | The Washington Capitals have a few needs, but with the No. 23 pick in the NHL Draft they are unlikely to find an immediate contributor so it is more likely that they draft the best player available than draft for need. Washington holds picks in each round, including two in the fifth round, and they could take a few defensemen to try and provide depth for a blue line corps. that could use it, but if the Capitals hope to improve upon this season's first round playoff exit, they are unlikely to do it via the draft. They'll have to hit the free agent market and see if they can work a trade to make it happen.

03:04 PM ET 06.17 | The Calgary Flames are chasing the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft and have offered up all three of their first round picks to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for the top selection. The Flames are willing to give up the No. 6, No. 22 an No. 28 pick in the draft to move up to No. 1, where they would likely select Seth Jones or Nathan MacKinnon, and the Avalanche have said that they are open to dealing the top pick. Whether three first rounders is enough to make Colorado budge remains to be seen.

02:59 PM ET 06.17 | Brendan Shanahan could be heading to Calgary to become the Flames' general manager or director of hockey operations. Shanahan was recently in Calgary meeting with Flames owner Murray Edwards about a role with the team, which regardless of the title, will leave him in charge of player personnel. Jay Feaster is still the general manager in Calgary, but not a popular one and Shanahan could be brought in to replace him or decide Feaster's future. Shanahan has built the NHL's Department of Player Safety in recent years and has become the face of it, but he may be ready to take on a new challenge in Calgary.

Red Wings eying Stephen Weiss

01:08 PM ET 06.17 | If free agent Valtteri Filppula decides to leave the Red Wings this summer, Detroit has a backup plan -- Stephen Weiss. An unrestricted free agent, Weiss is expected to draw interest from several teams this offseason, but the Red Wings should top the list of Filppula leaves. Weiss would be able to center the second line, freeing Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg up to play together on the first line. The Panthers are still working with Weiss on a new contract with the hope that they can lock him up before he hits free agency, but if he makes it to the open market, the Red Wings will be waiting.
