Time to penalize NHL's perennial losers?

08:47 AM ET 04.20 | It's time to revamp the Entry Draft. Time to end the league-sponsored charity that rewards perennial failures. Two or three straight years in the top seven should be enough to lay the groundwork for making the playoffs. Four or five straight years out of the playoffs should be enough to incur a penalty. Sabres. Panthers. Oilers. Islanders. Flames, Canes. Jets. The Welfare Class of an NHL whose administration promised the cap would mean anyone could win. Well not quite, no more so than the introduction of the cap meant ticket prices would become more affordable.

10:04 AM ET 04.20 | Still no word on whether Randy Carlyle returns as Leafs coach. Even those close to Carlyle don't seem to know. Dave Nonis has hinted he would like to keep Carlyle but Brendan Shanahan's vote counts for more now ... In Carlyle's career, by the way, his teams have won eight playoff rounds. In Barry Trotz's longer career, albeit with a limited Nashville team, his teams have won two playoff series.

10:02 AM ET 04.20 | As if they didn't have enough to complain about, imagine what Calgary Flames fans feel knowing they could have had Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar in a deal last year for Jarome Iginla. But general manager of the day, Jay Feaster, was insistent on a first-round draft pick being included in any deal for Iginla. In the end, the Flames may have little to show for Iginla and the Red Wings are flourishing with Nyquist's scoring and Tatar's speed.

05:57 AM ET 04.19 | Joel Quenneville will step off the Blackhawks' team charter Saturday night and meet his fellow Midnight Hawk owners for dinner. The coach hopes to celebrate two victories -- a road triumph by his Blackhawks over the Blues in Game 2 of their playoff series, and a win by Midnight Hawk in the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course on Saturday afternoon. "Like Joel said, 'There'd be nothing like that Daily Double,' " co-owner Mike Tice said. The 3-year-old is the morning-line favorite among eight horses in the Grade III, $500,000 Derby, which spans 1-1/8 miles. Tice, who befriended Quenneville as a Bears assistant from 2010 to '12, is part of the ownership group that also includes Hawks assistant Mike Kitchen and Kentucky Derby-winning breeder Mike Pegram.

Tuukka Rask takes blame for Bruins' Game 1 loss

06:54 AM ET 04.19 | Tuukka Rask was making no excuses. In a game that was well played on both sides -- just with very, very few real scoring chances -- Rask blamed himself for the one puck that found the back of a net. It was shot by Detroit star Pavel Datsyuk with 3:01 left in Game 1 of the Bruins-Red Wings first-rounder, a wrister from beyond the top of the left circle that gave the Wings a 1-0 victory and took away the B's home-ice advantage. "It went through me," said Rask. "So I think I should have it." The deciding goal came seconds after Milan Lucic's deflection of a Jarome Iginla pass nearly skittered in off the legs of Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard. Seconds later, Datsyuk carried the puck into the Bruins zone and, well covered by constant shadow Patrice Bergeron, let go a long shot that would normally be a routine save by Vezina Trophy favorite Rask. Not this time. Rask had a hard time picking up the in-coming puck and it beat him low on the glove side.
