07:19 AM ET 05.24 | The fiery new coach and his stolid boss, Joe Sakic, are quite different, but they now share in the same job description: winning games in Denver. The Avalanche had to play semantic games, carefully outlining the organization's decision-making hierarchy Thursday in announcing [Patrick Roy's] hiring as vice president of hockey operations and coach. Those were hints of the potential awkwardness. ... [Roy] wanted assurances that he was more than just a coach, a position the league treats roughly with the respect of a disposable razor. He got them. Roy won't expect to have, and won't accept having, only the coach's traditional marginal say in organizational decisions. It's up to the former teammates to make it work.

07:18 AM ET 05.24 | Jonathan Toews has seen far more of the penalty box than the back of the net against the Red Wings this playoff series, which has contributed to landing the Blackhawks on the brink of elimination. [Toews], the ultimate hockey battler, came close to being unglued in the second period of Thursday night's 2-0 loss. ... Toews collected a hat trick of minor penalties, the second of which led to Jakub Kindl's power-play goal and game-winner. In 48 regular-season games, Toews was whistled for just 11 minor penalties. In 5:39 of the second period, he took three. "I'm not going to say anything about the officiating," Toews said before doing just that. "I disagree with the calls. It's in the heat of the moment. They see what they see."

07:17 AM ET 05.24 | Well, the move worked, at least in a sense. John Tortorella scratched struggling center Brad Richards with the Rangers facing a do-or-die Game 4 at the Garden Thursday night, risking the loss of the locker room for removing a leader from the lineup. But after a 4-3 overtime win over the Boston Bruins, the Blueshirts coach defended both his decision and Richards. ... "I need to make decisions for what I feel is right for a team to win [Thursday's] game, and that's why I made that decision," Tortorella said. "This is a Conn Smythe winner, a guy I've grown up with, a guy that I love as a person and a player, but I have to make that decision regarding this. So kiss my ass if you want to run something different. It's not about blaming that guy."
