07:17 AM ET 05.16 | For Joe Thornton, Raffi Torres' hit on Jarret Stoll in Game 1 follows an old hockey adage. [The Sharks] voiced their support for their teammate, whom they think should not only not be suspended, but shouldn't have been penalized. The Sharks' captain was the most vocal. "We were kind of shocked [Wednesday] to hear he has to fly to New York," [Thornton said]. ... "It almost seems like the player getting hit has no responsibility at all right now ... It seems right now that the responsibility is on the hitter, and not the receiver right now." Do you agree with that? "No," Thornton said. "The way I was brought up was to keep your head up. Just keep your head up. When I was six years old, I was taught that."

07:16 AM ET 05.16 | Looking for a quick fix in Colorado? Take this to the bank: it's going to be a while before the Avs name a new coach. My spies tell me there will be no new coach in the near future. This probably means the following: The Avs would like to see if Dave Tippett will be available. ... Maybe the same applies to Lindy Ruff, but not as much as Tippett I don't think. ... Does this eliminate someone like Patrick Roy? I can't say for sure. Some people around the league still think the Avs would like to hire their former goalie. I'm not so sure (translation: I don't think so, but don't hold me to this). But I take [Joe Sakic] at his word: he doesn't want to hire a guy straight from junior.

07:23 AM ET 05.15 | One might reasonably wonder now how to translate "sour grapes" from Russian. Alex Ovechkin now has generated as many controversies as he's scored goals in the playoffs: one. After the Rangers eliminated Ovechkin's Capitals in a 5-0 Game 7 drubbing Monday night at the Verizon Center, Ovechkin reportedly told a Russian hockey writer in his native language that he believed there had been an officiating conspiracy to force a seventh game in the series. "Not saying there was a phone call, but they wanted Game 7," Ovechkin reportedly said in Russian, translated and tweeted by Slava Malamud, a senior writer for Russian sports daily Sports-Express. "For ratings. You know, lockout, escrow, league must make profit."

Blue line thinning at wrong time for Bruins

07:19 AM ET 05.15 | When the Bruins take to ice for Game 1 against the Rangers on Thursday, their defense corps might have a very different look than many expected entering the playoffs. Matt Bartkowski and Dougie Hamilton had to plug back in at the start against the Maple Leafs to make up for the injuries to Andrew Ference and Wade Redden. One day after Dennis Seidenberg was limited to 37 seconds of ice time in that dramatic win, the Bruins recalled Torey Krug from Providence (AHL). ... Krug, 22, recorded an assist in his one NHL game this season. He has played in just three NHL games in his career and never skated in the playoffs. The Bruins' other option would be veteran Aaron Johnson, who has played in nearly 300 NHL games, but none in the postseason.
