09:15 AM ET 03.08 | Fire forward Mike Magee is getting a raise. Magee and the club "are working on a deal to increase his salary substantially" but he will not be getting designated player status a league source has told the Tribune. Salaries for designated players do not count fully against the MLS salary cap. The MLS' most valuable player recently returned to the team recently after an absence he described as a "personal situation" but reports said was in fact frustration over a new deal. Brian Bliss, the team's technical director, confirmed at least part of the source's characterization.

Xavi, who played his 144th Champions League tie in the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Tuesday night is tied to Barcelona until 2016 when he will be 36 and, despite interest from elsewhere, he has made it clear he wants to see out his career at the Camp Nou. That would fall in line with Beckham???s franchise aspirations with his Miami-based club not expected to be ready to start until 2017 as they plan to build a new stadium with the waterfront at Biscayne Bay, near where Caribbean cruise ships dock, a potential site.

09:47 AM ET 02.21 | Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has apologized for the comments he made about the referee after his team lost to Barcelona in the Champions League. The Chilean had claimed that the Swedish referee was favoring Barca, was not up to the challenge of refereeing a Champions League match because he was Swedish, and that the referee was attempting to "fix" a mistake he made in a previous Barcelona match he had officiated. Today, however, Pellegrini apologized for his comments. Whether his apology was motivated by the UEFA investigation into his post-match comments is up for debate.
