Paulus out of Michigan picture?

After two days of rampant speculation that Duke floor general Greg Paulus would don the winged helmet in the fall, news comes that Michigan's courtship of the former All American quarterback has ceased. Sources indicated late Friday afternoon that the Michigan football program is no longer exploring the possibility of adding former Duke PG Paulus to its fall roster. The former Gatorade high school football National Player of the year visited Ann Arbor Tuesday, which subsequently ignited a firestorm of speculation about his possible future in the Maize & Blue. Even though Michigan has now turned the page on Paulus, that doesn't mean the book has been completely closed on filling one or more of its three open scholarship slots for the fall.

I hope that's all it was. Would be a huge mistake putting this guy on the roster.

i didnt yoou cant leave a sport like football for four yrs and come back and think you will still be good... plus hes so small does big 10 defenses would have killed this kid

I didn't think Michigan and him made sense anyway. I wonder if Syracuse is in the picture for him? The Orange would make sense considering it's his hometown and they have no QB to speak of.

I am not sure why anyone would seriously consider someone who has a single year of eligibility and hasn't played the game for over 4 yrs, short of a publicity stunt.

He's supposed to be "officially" visiting campus this week. Might be a decent move for them b/c they're in transition.... Esp if Marrone decides to run a spread offense and there's no QB with spread experience on the current roster.

You would consider it if Crompton was at the helm of your team.

Actually, and seriously, NO. At least with Crompton, you know what you have. Why waist a scholly on someone who is most likely no better.

I don't know how much of Crompton's issues revolved around the turnover at OC. He was supposed to be a stud out of HS.

Many of you are over analyzing this. All Paulus was going to be was back up. UM has no depth at QB and Paulus would have brought maturity and depth even though he hadn't played in so long. That's all. People with no knowledge of the situation have run rampant with speculation. That's the only reason why this is a story.

Exactly. If a team can give him a significantly-reduced playbook to work on through the summer, that's one more man in between the starting quarterback and the taking the redshirt off of the true freshman who is being groomed to take over the program.

Well said Warden, in addition, there would have been no wasted scholly. Michigan currently has three unused schollies that may not be used at all this year. Paulus would have used one of those scholorships for one year, and then it would have been available to use for someone else the following year.

how can he bring football maturity when he hasn't played college football? just asking.

April 21, 2009  12:36 PM ET

Look at it on the good side. He doesn't have to worry about trying to win more than 3 games this year at UM. At least he has a chance for more than 3 wins at Syracuse !!!!!!!!!

Thanks Warden.

So why would he leave Duke to be a back-up, if he could be a back-up at Duke?

April 21, 2009  01:37 PM ET

I don't know if he was being considered as a back-up or not, but even considering him at all makes you scratch your head. Mr. "inside-scoop" The Warden contends that he would add "maturity and depth." Since RichieRod keeps losing his QB's with experience (2 thru transfer and 1 due to injury), I can see why he might want some "maturity and depth." Paulus may be mature, but his ability to add depth this year is laughable. Why doesn't RR just commit to Forcier (or Robinson if he beats him out this fall) and get on with his rebuild?
