Eagle Lake (Fla.) Lake Region safety Marvin Robinson had just completed his freshman year when he first started creating a buzz among Michigan recruiting followers. That buzz has significantly increased over the last two years and culminated with Robinson's commitment to U-M on Friday. Rivals.com ranks Robinson as the No. 99 player in the country. He held offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee and USC, but Michigan held a special place on his list since he participated in their summer camp in June 2007.

It is great to see all these solid recruits for blue before their turn around even has started on the field.

whoop dee do! We got #99!!

April 21, 2009  08:07 AM ET

That is a big time recruit out of Florida. Congrats to Michigan. Given time RR will get them to the next level.

Any kid ranked in the top 100 is a good player. You have any idea how many HS seniors will be playing next fall? Top 100 is considered a big deal.

I really think RR is going to bring Michigan back to the top.

He will have time to recruit during the season cause he sure cannot coach!

Robinson is a solid player who has the possibility to play either Safety or LB and might end up projecting to be more of a LB as he continues to grow and go through college level S&C.

His recruitment is several years in the making. He was offered as a Sophomore when he participated @ Michigan's summer camp by Lloyd Carr and he seemed to have fallen in love with the Wolverines. Ever since then, he's made his way up to A2 from FL to visit. He had also visited OSU and camped at USC.

There were concerns about whether or not he was losing some love for UM because it has been reported his hs football coach is a HUGE OSU fan and was trying to steer him to OSU. Whether this is the case or not, I don't know. But I don know one poster on Scout's OSU board, a guy named Mike Hobbs, was adamant that OSU would have a very good chance in getting Marvin Robinson.

And remember, all HS kids are projects. Very few make the seamless transition from HS to college. Marvin will have a rude awakening when he hits Michigan and experiences Mike Barwis. But he will adjust and hopefully he'll be part of the puzzle that will bring Michigan back to the upper echelons of college football dominance.

Good for Rich Rodriguez to pull a kid out of Florida. That's where the speed and talent is. Anyway, I hope the kid is a big part of the future puzzle.

J. Hova,

Rich and his staff have done in Fl something no other UM coach has been able to do before. There are currently 7 kids from Fl on the team. Only one of them, Greg Matthews, was not the product of RR and his staff. For 2010, there now 2 from FL and chances are there will be more. What's even more interesting is that there have been some that said RR couldn't recruit MI or OH. Well, like some of the anti UM schlubs on here, UM has already gained the non binding verbals from 3 OH kids (OH is typically "RICH" --pun intended-- with great football talent) and 2 MI players, one being Devin Gardner who is in the top 3 best players in the state.

While all of this is nice, I still caution that it will be what these kids do on the football field that will validate their worth. I am going to make a wildly optimistic prediction that RichRod is going to build a team that is going to kick ass for many years to come. It might not be on the scale of USC, but UM will once again scare a lot of teams.

Looks like the kid has wanted to go to michigan for awhile. Now he is livin his dream apparently. Can't fault that.

Thanks for that. At least it's a departure from past years but yeah you are right it's what they do on the field that's going to matter.

April 21, 2009  10:50 AM ET

Yeah, RichRod deserves some credit for completing the deal. But note that the original disposition toward UM cane in 2007 under Carr when the recruit attended a UM summer camp.

April 21, 2009  11:01 AM ET

He's a stud - congrats.

Classic...he is now following Carr's plan of attack!

April 21, 2009  11:25 AM ET

WIith few exceptions, RR kept most of Carr's last recruiting class from bailing. No one seems to want to give him credit for that. Now, RR has had a few problems keeping Southern verbals in the fold. UM lost 3 last year. But that's to be expected with trying to get Southern kids up to Michigan. There has to be a really strong relationship between the kid and the coach recruiting him and the ability to knock down all the negative recruiting that happens against RR. And believe me, THERE'S A LOT OF NEGATIVE RECRUITING THAT HAPPENS IN THE SOUTH, ESPECIALLY AGAINST RR.

Nah, we just point out that it's much warmer down here, which means that coeds tend to wear fewer clothes. Works like a charm on 18 year old libidos.

3-9 is not negative recruiting in the south.

Yeah, there's that too. 9 losses in a season is less likely for Urban than 9 losses in a decade. Some of the 18 year olds might respond to that. Though I still like the old "appeal to the libido" approach.
