Ovechkin spied on Rangers practice

Alex Ovechkin may be the best player in hockey, but his head games need work. As the Caps waited at the Garden Monday for the Rangers to finish their morning skate so the visitors could have theirs, Ovechkin wandered to the away bench to watch his playoff opponents. After a few minutes, he was told he couldn't watch from the bench, so he smirked and retreated to the dressing room. Ovechkin said afterward that he took his front-row seat just to get under the excitable Tortorella's skin. Asked why he was told to leave, Ovechkin smiled and said: "They afraid of me."

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO afraid, get your team past the first round then talk

April 21, 2009  08:08 AM ET

Apparently, what #8 did, worked. At least last night.

April 21, 2009  08:08 AM ET

As much as I am pulling for the Rangers to upset the Caps in Round 1, their complete lack of any offensive prowess is finally catching up with them. They are making the Caps' rookie look like Brodeur...I hate to say it, but I can easily see the Caps winning in six. And yes, all of the media hype surrounding Ovechkin has gone straight to his head...he has an ego 10 miles wide.

Agreed.

Not so my friend. Ovechkin was creating chances. He also managed to tally 2 assists, was a +2, was on the ice for 3 of the 4 goals and basically dictated the flow of the game while he was on the ice. Also, much credit goes to Fedorov for providing a strong effort as well.

April 21, 2009  08:38 AM ET

I love Ovie.

That is lots of nads, to show up and simply sit there and watch. He shakes his head at Tortorella after being asked to leave, then comments that he is afraid of him. Caps played great last night, Avery made an **** of himself, a tradition that needs no comment. Game 4 is a huge one now, the Rangers won't be as flat, and the Caps need Ovie even more. Turning into a very entertaining series.

April 21, 2009  08:42 AM ET

Yet again a T&R headline is misleading. It's not uncommon for visiting players to watch from the stands when the home team skates but Ovie sitting on the bench was unusual and probably done to irk the Rangers. Calling it "spying" is a bit much considering he could be watching the exact same practice from the stands.

True, Actually I was more impressed with his defense last night than anything. He's also being smarter with the puck as you said, I think he sees himself as nonproductive if he doesn't score.

Ovie=Avery?

April 21, 2009  08:50 AM ET

didnt mean to quote

April 21, 2009  08:55 AM ET

i love that the same people praising ovie for making plays and getting assists are the same people who slam crosby for the same thing and argue ovie's better because he scores more goals. so by their previous logic semin is better than ovechkin.

April 21, 2009  08:55 AM ET

Avery=Overy

April 21, 2009  08:59 AM ET

I think they're making a mountain out of a mole hill calling this spying. IMO, it's more like bulletin board material like teams in the NFL use with Ovie's "They're afraid of me" comment.

This is a very fair point.

Anybody else notice had bad of a game Avery had? Long, long way to go in this thing but watching Avery whine and get pushed around by Erskine all night was fun.

I think it's safe to say every Ranger had a bad game

I need someone...ANYONE.. to objectively explain the mis conduct call.
game was way out of reach by then of course, so it really had no impact. Any other player in the league gets MAYBE 2 minutes.
Ovechkin proved again why he is the best player in the league. Not scoring goals? Okay, so he'll stop them from being scored and set them up. Not bad for a candy ***** european I guess, huh?
The play that turned the game was the deflection (Backstrom?) on Callahan's shot, which then nicks the post instead of going in. If it goes in, it's 1-1 and a totally different game.
I think last night wasn't indicative of how the rest of this will go though.
