Hawks, Flames exchange barbs

Adam Burish wouldn't mind grabbing a drink with Rene Bourque ... after the season. The opponents and friends, who played at Wisconsin and in Chicago together, engaged in some end-of-game fisticuffs in Game 3 that demonstrated how the Western Conference quarterfinal between the Blackhawks and Flames has transformed into something like "The Hills" meets MMA fighting. The physical and catty fighting has added drama into the playoffs series. "It's mean and nasty and competitive," Burish said Tuesday, smiling through a 10-minute interview with reporters. "I'm still going to hopefully have a beer with him after the season is done, but he's not my friend on the ice." The lasting images from Game 3 were Burish breaking his stick across Bourque's shoulder and a fuming Flames winger Jarome Iginla yelling in front of the Hawks' bench after a melee. Calgary coach Mike Keenan said the Hawks engaged in dirty tactics, while the Hawks accused the Flames of too much post-whistle hitting. The league sent out a memo asking teams to cut back on trash talking and curb their actions after plays. "People call it message-sending," Burish said. "Well, the entire playoffs is message-sending." The Flames were upset Burish didn't receive a suspension for his actions against Bourque, whom Keenan said is considered day-to-day as the result of an injury from Burish's high cross-check. Bourque, an ex-Hawk, did not practice during Tuesday's voluntary workout and was not available to the media. Keenan said Burish broke his stick across Bourque's face, but replays contradict that claim.

Mike Keenan... ah, I love his exagerations.

Seriously, off the ice, these guys for the most part really do like each other. This is probably the best series to watch of the bunch.

Looks like Carolina/Jersey will be the best of the first round series but yeah the Hawks/Flames has been entertaining. The last ten minutes of Game 3 was fun to watch.

According to Pierre McGuire, Burish pushes things a lot with his yap. McQuire made some commnet in the last game about how Iginla is simply going to drop the gloves and punch Burish's lights out. So I'd imagine much of what he is saying is very Averyesque.

And it pretty much looked to me like Burish did break his stick on Bourque if not on his face, very close to it..

Not that I care either way, just saying.

This series is the second best being played and I've watched every game. Yesterday was tough with 4 early games but I did my best.

SJ-Ana is #1. I'd give NJ-Car the 3 spot.

"It's mean and nasty and competitive,"

Exactly how it should be.

McGuire acts like he has never heard trash talk before. Maybe it would be safer up in the press box rather than down between the benches.

McGuire is a giant dooochebag and the sport would be better of if he just dropped off the face of the earth.

McGuire kept saying he has never hard anyone talk so much trash that is so unacceptable to Iginla, he said he never heard anything like that before. I wonder what the Hawks were saying to Iginla? Something about his race maybe?

Obviously it had nothing to do with the talentless Elisha Cuthbert.

I would echo that sentiment but he has ears and he was a coach so I tend to believe his comment at least in this instance. Burish is pushing the envelope a la Sean Avery.

And again, I'm not whining or sniveling about it, just saying.....

April 22, 2009  12:28 PM ET

McGuire has always been an **s kiss and is just sucking up to Iginla.

The issue of trash talking aside, from a tactical point of view, the Blackhawks may be makign a big mistake in getting Iginla going...

It's hard for me to say which series is looking the best right now, but I've loved what I've seen the past two days. I was out of the country for a week, so I didn't even know who my Wings were playing! But I watched the Flames-Hawks on Monday and that was some rough, fun stuff. And then I watched Philly-Pens last night and that was fun. But, although I couldn't watch the whole thing because I needed sleep, but Sharks-Ducks was thoroughly entertaining last night. Also, I have only seen highlights from NJ-Carolina, but that looks like the most competitive so far. I expect Sharks-Ducks to be a highly contested series from here on out.

As a side note, I didn't even hear that the Wings had signed the Mule to an 11-year (11-year!!!) contract until I was watching the NCAA title game that I taped. Things are turning up aces for me!

Oh my.
I think she must have ONE talent. Someone always "picks up her option"....

Wait so you didn't know who your "team" was playing or that they signed frazen, that was about 2 weeks ago. Get with it man!

Yes. People in town, wedding, flying to the DR and spending a week there with only 3 or 4 channels that were not Spanish is not the best way to keep up-to-date on things. Oh, and internet there was 7 bucks for half an hour.

Forgive me, it was a moment of weakness and I am back on track with my team! ;-)

The Wings are on cruise control against the Jackets who like they were just happy to get there. Better watch out for Vancouver though. They have "tough out" written all over them.
