How Perry handled Masters loss

At 5 a.m. April14, less than 36 hours after he'd let the Masters and its everlasting glory slip away, Kenny Perry got in his car and went for a ride. He'd driven home to Franklin, Ky., on Monday, one sleepless night after leading the Masters by two strokes with two holes remaining and somehow lost to Angel Cabrera in a sudden-death playoff. After a second sleepless night, Perry went out before dawn, alone, and drove through the Kentucky countryside that's been home for nearly 50 years. For three hours, Perry looked at the horses, the cows and the farms. And, he looked back. "I wasn't sorrowful," Perry said this week when he returned to the PGA Tour for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Perry said he thought about all that went right at the Masters -- for 70 holes he played beautifully -- and all that went wrong. Perry said he received nearly 600 e-mails and hundreds more cards and letters from around the world. Many messages were from parents who said Perry's graciousness was a lesson for their children. Greg Norman called. So did Phil Mickelson and George W. Bush. Scott Hoch, who missed a 2-foot putt to win the Masters, called. People keep hugging him, Perry said, and they're the ones with tears in their eyes.
