Ovechkin takes jabs at Avery

That mischieveous imp Alexander Ovechkin was toying with Rangers pest Sean Avery Wednesday morning at the skate before Game 4 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Taking playful digs, poking back, engaging in the media game and, most of all, setting a tone. As he knew it would, the subject of Avery's antics in Game 3 came up, the first-period gloved punch to the face of Washington defenseman John Erskine and the game-ending conversation with goaltender Simeon Varlamov followed by a no-look, walkoff punch to the face. Ovechkin, who is working on his masters in media manipulation, loved it. Recalling Avery's act in last year's playoffs, when he faced Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur and waved his hands to block the view, Ovechkin said, "Everybody knows him like kind of a guy who wants to distract the team's goalie like I remember he did last year against Martin Brodeur. He was just dancing over there. Too bad there was no music." Confronted with a provocative punch from Avery in Game 3, Erskine laughed it off as he watched Avery go to the penalty box. "That's why our team do best right now," Ovechkin said. "We didn't do any stupid moves, and we didn't answer back."

Wake me when Alex's team wins a playoff series.

April 23, 2009  07:12 AM ET

Did I see Avery hold his stick blade up to Ovechkin's throat while Ovie was seated on the ice? I think that's stepping over the line. He's not entertaining anymore.

April 23, 2009  07:31 AM ET

Sean Avery is an absolute joke. The plain reality is he can't fake things forever, and he's back to being what he really is; a childish, ignorant, a**hole, with no understanding of what it is like to be even remotely close to a decent human being.

That's who he is. He will not change.

April 23, 2009  08:15 AM ET

Rangers have the Caps in a choke hold in the series, better play alot harder than you did last night ovie

April 23, 2009  08:20 AM ET

I thought ovie played well.... every time the rangers D collapsed on him he managed to find an open player..... i was shocked... i didnt know he knew how to pass the puck..

April 23, 2009  08:25 AM ET

"...we didn't answer back"

Truer words, these could not be.

April 23, 2009  08:28 AM ET

1) We didn't play very well last night and despite that we hit the post three times and lost on a misplay by Varlamov. Disappointing, but hey the series ain't done until New York wins a fourth game.

2) Steve Avery is a really good player as evidenced by Torts putting him on the 1st line. You don't get a job on the 1st line - especially from Torts - if you aren't a legit player. Unfortunately he cannot control himself and commits self-inflicted wound after self-inflicted wound. Its easy to call him an ****hole, and how Erskine or someone else has held back from putting him in the hospital at some point in the last two games is beyond me, but in reality he is just a sad example of wasted talent and "what could be".

April 23, 2009  08:31 AM ET

"That's why our team do best right now," Ovechkin said.

Last time I looked, it was the Rangers who were up 3-1 in the series.

April 23, 2009  08:46 AM ET

Torts looked like he was gonna blow a gasket. If Avery is a player he needs to rely on in these playoffs good luck with that. Better start taking blood pressure pills.

April 23, 2009  08:48 AM ET

Are you **** kidding me...."the mischievous imp" Alexander Ovechkin? I am hoping the series will end tomorrow so the media can each have their turn with him and be done with it. I know everyone loves to hate Crosby for his stoicism, but a lot of people see tremendous value in that...I know Shero does.

To be honest, neither one entertains me. I think the Rangers will be just about done with Avery's $*&t after this season, and AO is a child. Play hockey fellas!

He did. I thought it was funny, actually. But the Rangers wanted him, and now they have to deal with him!

They won't. The media will still praise AO. Watch and see.

I have to say, what leaps out at me here is that you said "Steve" Avery. That's what I keep calling him, and my kids keep correcting me. Steve Avery was a "could have been" left-handed pitcher for Atlanta in the early '90s. Blazing fast ball. Hurt his arm and was never the same. a shame.
As far as sean...

Agree. Avery might be a pest but he is doing pretty well in less shots then Ovie.

Well, there was something about the racist and homophobic comments that hurt his career as well.

April 23, 2009  09:49 AM ET

for all we know maybe avery is doing exactly what he has to do.... maybe alot of the caps have avery on their minds.... for all we know they could be talking about killing him right now.....lol..... if that were the case id say hes doing his job..... another point is that a few months ago before the avery signing everyone had wrote off the rangers, they are now 1 game away from eliminating a very good if not stanley cup contending team....something has to be working.
