Fratello, Jordan among Kings candidates

Some 80 minutes after the Kings announced that interim coach Kenny Natt would not return next season, general manager Geoff Petrie made his preferences clear to the media as they pertain to the team's fifth coach in the last five years. And after calling only for candidates that come with NBA head coaching experience and a successful track record at that, he had his stance supported by Joe Maloof. Based on Petrie's standards, the Kings are expected to consider Paul Westphal, Eddie Jordan, Del Harris, and Mike Fratello. There are others who don't quite qualify as former NBA head coaches who "had some level of success," as Petrie said, but who are likely to be discussed, such as former Atlanta coach and current UNLV coach Lon Kruger and former Minnesota head coach Dwane Casey.

I like this GM.. he's going for mediocre caoches cos he knows his team will suck for another century. Why are they hanging on to K-Mart though? doesn't he make more money than the coach?

why hire an older guy who won't be around when the team actually MIGHT have a chance of competing.....what's the point?

Because this team is young and inexperienced? Anyway to me it makes sense to go after the name even if it's a fading one. Also some of those coaches named have been away from the game for so long now that they would jump at the chance to be coach of the Kings regardless of how bad they are.

When's the last time you heard Del Harris or Paul Westphal in contention for an NBA job? Both of those two would come running to Sacramento for a shot at the big show again.

The Kings will continue to be the division's doormat until the Maloofs committ to compete. No coach is going to be successful under the current circumstances. This job is a waste of time. I guess the above mentioned candidates could use the money, but the job is what it is, a brief stopover on the road to nowhere.

I don't like the last job Fratello did with Memphis. He took over a young, flawed team with some talent from Hubie and when he was finished they were just mediocre losers.

Right now Del Harris is the lead assistant coach for CHI BULLS, with rookie Head Coach Vinny Del Negro : Last season 07-08 Westphal was an assistant coach under Avery Johnson in DAL.When Johnson was replaced by Rick Carlisle, Westphal left coaching to become executive vice-president of basketball operations (under Donnie Nelson) for DAL : And Dwane Casey is a 2rd assistant coach in DAL.

Yeah I did forget they were assistants, I should have said NBA Head Coaching Job.

Not to the condidates- rent a condo because you'll be fired in January

Fratello is too old school for the Kings young team, he would have been perfect for the Suns job. His approach would be too much of a military discipline that the young players would not accept. If you noticed this season, Larry Brown in North Carolina, began the season with a team of young players, and at the end of the season he had mostly veteran players. The team was stuck in mud until he was able to get older, mature players to run his system. I don't believe that the Moloofs would bend for Fratello the way Jordan bend for Brown. Besides, the Kings biggest obstacle is the Lakers, and I don't believe Fratello can coach against that kind of pressure with a bunch of young players.

Man if they hire Fratello it will be a snooze fest in Sac-town. His walk the ball up style might be the worst offense in the last 15-20 years. See the Kemp led Cavs.

The run and gun has been so successful, why would they change?

April 24, 2009  02:05 PM ET

Fratello needs Bosley Medical. Those things on his head are terrible.

Yeah, the Kings were oh so close to the playoffs, huh????

Fratello has gone overboard on the plastic surgeries but still a above average coach...
