08:35 AM ET 04.24 | The booing caught Derek Fisher off guard. "It was shocking," he said the other day, recalling his return to EnergySolutions Arena last season with the Lakers. "It was disappointing." Fisher left the Utah Jazz after one season, asking to be released from his contract so he could find the best medical attention available for his infant daughter, Tatum, who was diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer in the spring of 2007. The Jazz let Fisher out of his contract, and he signed with the Lakers, believing Tatum could find superior doctors in Los Angeles. Fisher thanked the Jazz for their understanding and moved on with his life and his career. He wasn't prepared for the rough reception from Jazz fans when he returned.

Man what does he expect... even Lebron gets booed on his own court.... let alone being a player on the opposing team. Got tacos?

These athlete/celebrities don't want fans involved in their personal
lives when they go out partying, do not so good stuff.....
but they WANT fans to love them when they do good things or
unfortunatley have family issues.....
they can't have it both ways.
He was in Utah for one year
- it's also the playofs -

Sorry bout that Fisher, some fans in Utah are cry asses. Maybe some felt smited by the fact you left the Jazz and signed a new contract w/ LA very shortly after.. But sorry again.

Fish is one of the most classy guys in any sport. He busted his ass when he was in Utah. The morons in utah seem to have forgotten how he would fly across the country to be at his daughters doctor visits, then be on the court that very night. I think the health and safety of your children is about as legit a reason as there is for asking out of a contract. He took less money to play with the Lakers.

Way to make yourselves look like lowlifes with no class jazz fans.

This was last year, not last night. Fisher did what he had to do for his family. Next!!!

April 24, 2009  09:45 AM ET

Boo-hoo-hooooo!! Stop being a cry baby!! YOUR THE ENEMY NOW!! It's the Playoffs, fool, and it's the nature of the WHOLE entire business (fans)!!

April 24, 2009  09:46 AM ET

Show'em watcha got!!

April 24, 2009  09:53 AM ET

I don't like to see stuff like that in any sport, booing is okay.. but it's not as if he left cause he didn't like the team or Utah itself, he had to do what was right for his sick daughter... but then again the Utah fans are obviously doing something right cause Utah play great at home usually.

April 24, 2009  10:02 AM ET

Fisher shouldn't be shocked, since they booed him in Utah all last season as well. Very timely article LA Times, way to be on the cutting edge of the news.

And I'm not going to say that they are wrong or right to boo the guy because I'm not familiar with the whole situation, but wasn't his daughters doctor in NY? So he leaves the Jazz to supposedly be with his daughter through her treatment (obviously the right move) but then immediately signs with a team even farther away from NY? That may be why Utah fans are upset, even if they did switch doctors eventually, and I can't totally blame them if thats the case.

Plus it is the playoffs, everyone on the visiting team should get booed.

Good point I might have missed that.

At first I thought - fool me once...

Great game by the Jazz last night. They would be a extremely deadly team merely if the NBA didn't call it's fouls so tightly.

get over if cry baby

Completely agree. The guy has always been classy and he left the team for his DAUGHTER who was in poor health, not because he wanted out of Utah. Family comes before basketball.

I forgot that he made that trip to see his daughter then came back that night to play. And from what I remember, he hit a big shot against whomever they were playing. Classless move by the Utah fanbase.

YOU LEFT YOU SCRUB!!! You dont play for the Jazz!

April 24, 2009  10:53 AM ET

those utah fans are class less.

he left so his child could receive medical care. utah let him go as well because they had feelings for the guy and his family. at least show some respect. he is one of the nicest character guys we have in this league. i dont mind them booing kobe. but fisher? i mean all he did was take utah to the western finals in his one tear.

no fury like a Mormon scorned.

It might have been me he heard, all the way from L.A., as they were stinking, giving up that double-digit lead. I didn't think I'd be saying this this early in the playoffs, but tomorrow's game, is a MUST win.

April 24, 2009  11:22 AM ET

jazz aint winning the next game. lakers in 5. then only if my blazers win against rockets we will hv blazers/lakers matchup. kobe and roy plus oden and bynum.

April 24, 2009  11:24 AM ET

Are we still talking about this, I thought that this was old news. This is the playoffs, everyone gets booed in Utah. Give me a break. We boo him here in Utah because he left to join and improve a team that we don't like, because LA often stands in our way of moving on in the playoffs. Is that so hard to understand. I'll keep booing, thank you.
