Avery supports benching

The decision to scratch Sean Avery from what would become last night's 4-0 Game 5 debacle of a defeat to the Capitals, which forces this opening-round best-of-seven back to the Garden tomorrow afternoon, was not explained by John Tortorella. It was, however, endorsed by Avery himself in a conversation with The Post minutes after the match in which Henrik Lundqvist proved to be made of flesh and blood, not high-tech substances. "I totally stand behind what Torts did," said Avery, who took two mindless penalties in the final 10 minutes of the Rangers' 2-1 Game 4 victory. "The team comes first. "I made a mistake. I took two bad penalties. I put the game in jeopardy. It wasn't something I did intentionally, but that's no excuse. I did it. "I realize that Torts is making me a better player. The team always comes first. I'll do anything for these guys. No one feels worse than me at this point."

Wow...either Avery is turning over a new leaf or he has a great publicist.

I wonder which girlfriend prepared that statement for him?

April 25, 2009  10:35 AM ET

Of course he supports it, why wouldn't he? I think the worst thing about Avery is that he knows that he is a tool box and he just doesn't do anything to change that, only support it... makes me want to punch him in the face so I guess he is doing his job, right?

Talk about a programmed response.

This guy is hilarious.

I can just see him reading his response from a letter, monotone, no expression.

Waiting for media to leave and then punching a hole in the wall...

I love it that Tororella had the kahunas to make this idiot pay for his actions, takes a big man to sit such a well-known player during the post season. No matter what happens from here on out, I have gained much respect for Tortorella.

I'm guessing RuPaul.

The guy just wants back in and he will do anything to show that he is worth another look. As crazy as he is he is not stupid. Dallas already dumped him and he knows that if it doesn't work in NY he is going to have an early career in the fashion indusry/gossip-fashion mag.

Like anybody believes this is sincere

It sounds like a memorized speech.

Put your seatbelt on LPG, this game is gonna brutal. I predict a lot of hitting. Everywhere and anywhere by both teams.

I dont think he belongs in the league LGP. BUT...i really do hope the coach doesnt scratch him for the New York vs Boston series so my PP can rip the Rangers to pieces, all thanks to Avery while he's in the box wondering what he did wrong on a flagrant foul.

We think alike. :)

April 25, 2009  03:07 PM ET

Just getting ready for Philly/Pitt. This should be good to.

April 25, 2009  03:11 PM ET

Well good response by him. Fabricated or not remember that Bettman does not realize these things so it is good for him.

I still think the Rangers will win.

April 25, 2009  03:59 PM ET

What was Avery going to say? My coach is a moron... The only thing that this shows is that Avery is who every other GM thought he was (minus Sather). He can't control himself......Avery should have been benched for the fact that he has been terrible the entire series.

Now hold on just a second there, bgm :)

April 26, 2009  07:58 AM ET

all i see is avery getting press.... which is high on his list of things to do.... the press will continue to swarm him until he says something averyesk.... he has them were he wants them..... waiting for his real side to show..... though i believe he wants to play and hated being benched.... he loves the spot light.... and in the nhl theres no bigger spot light then the playoffs.

The Rangers lost their edge in the series now anyway... expect the Caps to win in 7 now
