Mets 'really, really concerned' about pitcher

06:37 AM ET 04.27 | Oliver Perez has stuff. That is all he has. He does not have an impressive pitching IQ. He has little craft. He generally has no clue where the ball is going once it leaves his hand. This is not like, say, Johan Santana, who through athleticism or intellect or will can still unfurl ways to win even when his repertoire is not sharp. Take away the stuff from Oliver Perez and you have a warrior on the battlefield without a weapon. And that is why manager Jerry Manuel says he is "really, really concerned." Because Perez has no weapons right now. His fastball lacks zip, the breaking ball has limited bite. Perez struck out two Nationals in the first inning, and then did not whiff another non-pitcher in 4 1/3 innings. Manuel is used to seeing Perez lack command. But the tease with Perez is that he often has the arsenal to walk guys or pitch from behind and still survive. Nevertheless, even the tease is gone now, and Manuel said, "No stuff and no command is a recipe for disaster." So this is what the Mets have at present: A $36 million disaster. They re-invested in Perez in the offseason under the belief that Dan Warthen, who became the pitching coach last June, had -- in the words of Manuel -- "unlocked [Perez] and he became pretty consistent."

morning cat, and becca. sounds like you both have had good weekends. :)

April 27, 2009  08:28 AM ET

perez stinks, he was inconsistent last year and stinks it up this year. but what were the mets supposed to do? middle rotation starters are so very hard to come by when you're talking about 32 teams x 5.
in modern baseball its no longer about finding guys to win games at the back, its about finding guys to eat up innings.
the only thing the mets can do now is bite the bullet, bring up niese and work through his growing pains.

i think this will be the story of the year, by the way..last year the big story was "quality starts", pitchers who barely get through 5 innings giving up three runs.
this year it will be pitchers who get hammered and chased out of games early and teams unwilling to use their bullpens, we've already seen two teams use position players to close out games.
this is what comes from a culture of super specialized, one inning pitchers. if more teams train their bullpens to go long relief there would be more starting quality guys and less tax on bullpens.
