Would NHL benefit from second Toronto team?

08:13 AM ET 04.27 | Before it happens--if it ever happens -- there will be about a million different stories detailing the levels of interest in a second National Hockey League franchise in Toronto. And all of them should be taken seriously. Because it should happen. Because it makes sense. Because an NHL with a Toronto Panthers instead of a Florida team, or a Toronto Coyotes instead of a Phoenix team is a stronger league. And you can make the same case with Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and the Islanders. Never mind Hamilton or Waterloo as possible sites for a future team. Those are secondary markets. If there is to be a second team in Southern Ontario, it should be in the NHL's strongest market. The time isn't right; it's now overdue. It may be quaint for commissioner Gary Bettman to fight for his markets -- and never mind that at least eight NHL teams are either for sale or in some sort of financial difficulty -- but his job is to grow the league and make it the most financially viable it can be. A second Toronto franchise guarantees that. And these days, what else can you guarantee?

Please make a note...the Stanley Cup is actually taller than Bettman (see above photo). Kind of makes me imagine the winning team picking up Gary and skating around with him over their head around the rink...but I guess only a Sun Belt Team would do that if they were to win again...A second team in Toronto? Excellent idea on several levels. Which is precisely why Bettman continues to disregard it!

I guarantee that the writer of this article is so pro-Toronto that he is blind to his own slights towards his fellow Ontarians. The Toronto Sun is a clown show. I'm sorry, the author may be right in saying Toronto is a more financially responsible choice for those teams, but does the writer have to be so rude and arrogant? This just makes me hate Toronto media even more.

NEWS flash from outside Toronto... Toronto is not the center of the universe! Details to follow.

Here we go with the Toronto Sun again.

Do I think Toronto is better than most of the Sun belt teams? Yes. However a Canadian city currently without a team would be a better choice IMHO.

I don't know. I think a 2nd team in Toronto would do better than some teams right now that are obviously struggling (Phoenix, Tampa, Atlanta, ect.) to get fans in the seats.

Is it me or does the Toronto Sun sound like the Onion after a while?

Too close to midget wrestling for it to happen. :)

Good old toronto sun, How about they get one team first and maybe provide an atmosphere that a player would want to be. I know the 3 last places I would want to play is Toronto, Montreal, then New York.

Thank you. I have no idea what I would do without the Toronto Sun.

The NHL would benefit from some new leadership.. Forget adding teams.. Eliminate some!

April 27, 2009  12:42 PM ET

I am from Toronto. Read my words: THIS IS NOT HAPPENING.
Let's end this bulls--t story now before it gets out of ... oh wait, I forgot, it's Toronto and hockey, this will never end as long as the sport is around.

Toronto probably could sustain a second team, but that doesn't mean it's in the best interest of the NHL. Though, i'd love it if a second team won the cup before the Major Laughs did.

Can you say Winnipeg?

The problem I see is that the new team would always be playing second fiddle to the Leafs. Sort of like the NBA situation in Los Angeles, where the Clippers are always in the Lakers' shadow. Although, given the way the Leafs have played in recent seasons, perhaps THEY have already become the Clippers of the Toronto hockey market...

They wouldn't be second fiddle if they win the Cup before the Leafs. I'll tell you who would really benefit--long-suffering Toronto hockey fans, especially the ones who can't afford a king's ranson to take their families to watch meaningless hockey during the season.
