Why Aggies are ticked at Mike Leach

New Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee was stunned to read comments from Texas Tech coach Mike Leach that blasted the current Texas A&M coaching staff. A&M coach Mike Sherman wasn't particularly pleased, either. "I don't understand Coach Leach's comments about Stephen McGee," Sherman said Monday. "He was named our starter until he got injured. I've always believed in Stephen's character and I've always believed in his talent, and I always will. I see him having an outstanding NFL career. "Coach Leach is in no position to comment about my relationship with Stephen McGee." Leach has a history of needling the Aggies. He was quoted Monday in The News saying he was happy for McGee, who was the first pick in the fourth round. "The Dallas Cowboys like him more than his coaches at A&M did," Leach said Sunday. He could not be reached immediately on Monday. McGee, a coach's son known for keeping his cool, bristled at that idea. He said Sherman and former coach Dennis Franchione played a huge role in his life and helped him become the NFL draftee he is today. "I don't know where that comment came from or who it was directed at," McGee said. "But I am shocked because my time at A&M was very special to me. Obviously I got injured, and many people think that Coach Sherman benched me. That's just not true. "If I had a son today and he was a college quarterback, I would send him to Coach Sherman or Coach Fran without any doubt, without any question, first and foremost. "My time at A&M had some ups and downs, bumps and bruises. But I am so thankful for the time and proud to be an Aggie."

Leach, chinless and unapologetic, continues his mastered art of talking out of his neck. He's pissy because the NFL thought his boy didn't smell so nice.

Do you hear that HS Senior QB's? Go to Tech, throw for 5,000 yds/yr and don't get drafted. Must be a conspiracy against modern day pirates. Perhaps the chinless one should consider a few plays taken under center?

Texas Tech has 1 good year and now we have to listen to this clown??? Harrell's problem is that the NHL is not the wide open college game where you just air it out 50 times a game to a terrific wide receiver. Crabtree's problem is that he is flashy player. NFL has though but is he elite enough to be one of them? We will see what Crabtree does when a free safety crushes him in the NFL.

Someone needs to tell this sideshow of a coach that Heisman trophy winning QB don't always do well in NFL so why is Harrell different?

April 28, 2009  07:37 AM ET

Not interested in the drama of coaches trash talking a rival school. Or the (gasp!) revelation that the target of such trash talk takes offense. Does Tech have anything to reload with, or would they struggle in 2009 against Odessa Permiam HS? Does A&M have realistic expectations of improving over last year's train wreck of a season, or will their football team continue to be the funniest Aggie joke around? How about some real Big XII football substance, FN?

Did I miss something? When did Harrell win a Heisman? I thought the last four years were Bush, Smith, Tebow and Bradford.

April 28, 2009  08:01 AM ET

These 2 teams and their fans have talked trash ever since the 2001 incident where the Red Raiders tore down the goal posts and shoved it into the Aggie section of the stands. This has actually brought some balance to the Big 12 south. Before this incident, the Aggies focused only on beating Texas. Now they focus on beating Texas Tech as well as Texas. Maybe someday when the Aggies grow up they can focus on beating Army.

He also apparently had hockey on his mind.

Baby steps. They should start by trying to beat Tyler Lee High School JV. Then maybe Hurst Bell HS varsity. Only then should they consider trying to beat other college teams.

They play the same quality of football at the same level so focusing on Texas makes no sense as they are much better.

Baylor will probably beat them both this year.

Yes. Definitely. TB Bucs cheerleader. I don't even like TB but the have some high quality gals.

Baylor's looking to be significantly improved. Real good QB, decent receivers, improved D. Could be a "trap" game for OSU, even OU or UT if they take Baylor lightly.

Actually I think he has two chins but that's just me.

Sadly, he received a commit from a pretty good HS QB. Somehow he keeps sucking them in but the Big 12's not known for having NFL quality QB's. Watch how they butcher Colt, Robinson and Bradford next year while going all ga ga over Tebow.

Stafford refused to play in the Big 12 and said as much coming out of HS. It's why he ended up in GA. Even Sanchez got love for no reason other than he was at USC. Of course, Freeman got drafted this year at 17 so maybe there's hope.

I agree. Briles has it going on there and there are a number of quality players talking Baylor before even considering Ag or Raider. As close to the DFW area as they are he could build quite a pipeline and cause Okie more fits in recruiting. Okie's having a tough time this year in what is usually their backyard for recruiting.

Mack's still doing OK in the DFW area. Don't see him having too much trouble competing with Baylor. Waco's not as ugly a place as Lubbock, but it's not Austin, and UT is not a church school (i.e., the coeds are generally "friendlier").

I thought Leach made a great shot...the kid drafted from A&M was a scrub. (That's right...I went 1999, TLC on you...) Did you see Harrell's numbers next to McGee's?

It's embarrassing that Harrell didn't get drafted.

And everyone wins when there are friendlier coeds.

"System quarterback" is a label tossed around by uninformed fans. The knock on Harrell is his deep ball. Period.

Tebow's throwing ability doesn't strike me as NFL caliber. Bradford and McCoy do, although McCoy will have to show a better deep ball in order to be considered as a draftee. The jury is still out on Robinson.

April 28, 2009  08:38 AM ET

If you're that sensitive, poor baby, the NFL is NOT for you... this kid's going to cry like a three year old if he gets any REAL criticism... pathetic.

Yep but it also seems to be tossed around by NFL scouts too. For all his numbers Harrell's arm strength was a big question mark. Sanchez got love because he was "nfl ready" which has less to do with his ability and more to do with the offense he ran.

Bradford should be fun to watch with new receivers and OL this year. Last year he had huge windows to throw into. Colts question mark is the deep ball certainly.
