Tortorella spars with reporter

We have only Jim Schoenfeld's word for it that John Tortorella is remorseful for throwing a water bottle, brandishing a stick toward a fan and ending up suspended for a game in which the Rangers failed to nail down what would have been one of the great upsets in their history. Actually the only thing obvious remains the Ranger coach's lust for confrontation and hard-headed ability to make a bad situation worse. Pathetically, this is how he tried to put the incident behind his team yesterday before it headed to Washington for Game 7. "I have no response, I'm not discussing that," Tortorella said when asked by the Post's Larry Brooks for a reaction to his suspension. "You're not discussing the fact you were suspended for a playoff game?" responded Brooks. "That's just what I said," said Tortorella. "Next question." "That's unbelievable, John. Unbelievable." "You guys have your opinions, write 'em. Next question." "So after a player commits a mistake, he doesn't have an obligation to talk?" "You guys think you're entitled to all information, Larry." "I'm asking for your opinion, not information." "You have your opinion. You don't need mine and I'm not going to give it to you. Next question, please."

Larry Brooks and John Tortorella really don't like each other. Larry Brooks seems to think he is completely entitled to everyones thoughts. What a clown shoe. If someone does not want to talk about something, they are under no obligation to talk about it. Besides, Brooks has gotten awful in his writing over the last few years, he used to be fantastic, now he's slowly becoming a hack.

Agree with the previous comments...reporters in all sports in general feel entitled to have every questions answered. They say its 'cause the fans have a right to know, but we all understand its so they can remain employed by having something to write about. The simple fact is nobody has to talk to the reporters, and in some cases its simply to avoid getting fined, because most leagues punish players and coaches for speaking openly about certain subjects. Bottom line is Brooks didn't get an answer...tough luck Larry.

Exactly, what these reporters need to understand is, no one under any circumstance has to talk to them. Being rude about it, well, that makes it worse, because the next time Larry Brooks is assigned a press conference for the Rangers, guess who won't be allowed to ask a question.

Fans do not have a right to know everything that goes on. No one has the right. It's a privilege. The press have the privilege of asking questions, and the right to report on the answers, or to infer a non-response in an editorial.

Does anyone like Torts? He wont be the Rags coach next year and probably not an NHL coach at all next year. He's a joke.

Zero composure.

As a side, anyone else hear that Cheraponov was blood doping heavily when he died? I just heard it on the radio...if that's the case then the NHL shuld take back that pick they awarded the Rangers.

April 28, 2009  08:50 AM ET

Jeez, I can't wait for this series to be over now just so this crap stops!

April 28, 2009  09:17 AM ET

I really hope torts and the rangers are booking tee times after the game tonight.

April 28, 2009  09:32 AM ET

First off Larry Brooks is an embarrassment. For years all he did was write make up stories on who is getting traded, which never happened. Then it was every player in the NHL wants to come to the Rangers articles. More recently it's his obsession with Sean Avery. It's comical. Every single article is about Avery. Now it's him and Torts. They don't like each other. So Torts isn't going to answer is questions. Larry thinks he is entitled to them being answered so he keeps digging. Is Torts being a baby, yes. Is Larry trying to become the story himself yes. Is Larry purposely trying to get a reaction from Torts, yes.
Tell Larry no one cares. What is he hoping to get from Torts with that questioning? No coach will be happy they were suspended, isn't that obvious.

April 28, 2009  09:48 AM ET

Brooks has been and will continue to be a moron...next

April 28, 2009  09:49 AM ET

Actually, this kind of reminds of when Jim Gray ambushed Pete Rose on the field during some All Time All Star Game or another...what a tool. The press has to stop thinking that they're the story

April 28, 2009  10:03 AM ET

It's the NHL Playoffs for God's sake. One would think reporters would be used to not getting answers to questions. Furthermore, Torts and the Rangers are facing a Game 7 tomight. Anyone else think he wants his players to focus on the game and not this crap?

April 28, 2009  10:03 AM ET

Well in all fairness he is talking to the New York Post and it is a little light on the facts/heavy on opinion. They might as well call it the Toronto Sun. However, if we have learned nothing from the Knicks' debacle I can honestly say that Torts' incident has nothing on Isiah Thomas' tenure. The Dolans will probably offer him a contract extension because he is in the playoffs. I'm not a Rangers fan, obviously, but they shouldn't have a coach performing antics like that or treating the press like Sean Avery.

April 28, 2009  10:03 AM ET

*tonight*

April 28, 2009  10:09 AM ET

I can't wait to hear all the jeering at the Verizon Center tonight. Between Avery on the ice and Tortorella pacing the bench this should be comical if not interesting. It is a shame that this incident happened in the first place but it will make an interesting game 7.

April 28, 2009  10:15 AM ET

Can I say again? I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME!!!

Hopefully, it is close and even goes to OT (a girl can fantasize, can't she?) and not some ridiculous blow out one way or the other.

I do, really.

And that's laughable moral outrage from a rag sheet that doesn't hesitate to publish unsubstantiated innuendo. "Retractions to follow" should be its motto.
