Johnson: We got lucky at Talladega

Jimmie Johnson said NASCAR might not be able to avoid tragedy if a car gets into the catch fence again as it did Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, but he doesn't see any immediate change that might prevent a repeat incident. Johnson was asked during a teleconference Tuesday whether too much had been made of Carl Edwards' crash into the Talladega fence in an incident that left seven people injured from flying debris. The accident occurred when Edwards, trying to block Phoenix Racing's Brad Keselowski heading to the finish line, spun and got slightly into the air when he was punted by Stewart-Haas Racing's Ryan Newman. "If Carl's car may have been four feet higher and didn't touch the retaining wall and solely went into the catch fence, it could have been really bad," Johnson said. "The car could have gone through it or it would have started pulling that car apart a lot like Geoff Bodine's truck years back [at Daytona]. So the catch fence did its job, but we will hurt a lot of people, if not worse, if cars are in the catch fence. We got lucky there."

And the NASCAR band plays on.

You got that right, or who knows how high it could have flew. Makes you wonder how someone can stand by the side of the road on some of those european road races. I used to be one of many 20-somethings that used to (drag) race behind Metro airport outside Detroit. Two lane blacktop all of us standing by the side of the road, both sides. Back then some cars went 13 seconds and even faster stock, in a quartermile, we're about three feet away. Since the race was about done, I bet half those (drunk?) spectators couldn't have gotten out of the way if they wanted to.

those cars weigh in excess of 3000 pounds. to get one four feet higher... just the sheer physics of the speeds carl would've had to be going at to get four more feet of elevation... won't happen.

Just remember, NASCAR drivers are famous for getting cars to do things they shouldn't do. There is no reason Jeff Gordon plowed the inside wall where he did last year at Vegas, but he did.

I also strongly disagree that is it impossible to get a car 4 extra feet into the air. How many times have we seen a car get higher than Edwards car was off the track Sunday? I can think of several times NASCAR has seen cars get higher than what his car got into the air.

I do think one change needs to be made with the facility at 'Dega. I think they need to increase the height of the catch fence. The fence at 'Dega is lower than at several other tracks including Lowe's. I think NASCAR, the IRL and other racing series need to do research to see if there is a better style catch fence which will do a better job preventing debris from going though the fence while at the same time allowing.

watching the video, it looks like to me the fence did a really good job of retaining the debris... the vast majority of it ended up on the race track. a little higher would be a good idea, but it would have to be a little better braced to withstand the extra height, which would decrease visibility.

April 29, 2009  04:51 PM ET

Dont decrease visibility...that costs ticket income. I still think the ideal situation involves a pole in the crowd.......and poles are horrible for watching races. Lowes tried to sell me one of those ticks.

Respects to the Poole family. The big lug wrote half the articles we commented on here. Hopefully his friends and family know that we rag on everyone, and he was just a fun target. Hate to lose one of the wiser ones and even a part of racing history.

4 feet higher? No problem. At 200mph, I don't care if the car is 3400lbs...the right angle is all that's needed. The bottom of the cars are as aero as they can get...and with all the flaps and spoilers etc...it's only luck it didn't go higher. The question is would it have gone higher without the hit or did the hit make it go as high as it did? Thankfully both drivers are fine...it was one ugly wreck.

I still say make the damn rooflaps longer/wider!!!

April 30, 2009  08:04 AM ET

That "thing" on the trunk is designed to keep the south end on the ground -- let me see, if I am now flying backwards at 190 mph, we have lift -- Ooops, NASCAR did you think about that?? I think NOT! Next thing ya' know NASCAR will want to hang laundry (drag chute) on em'...
