Sharks GM furious over playoff loss
Sharks general manager Doug Wilson let his anger punctuate his day today, apologizing several times to the fan base and his owners (clever touch, that) for the team's brief and undistinguished playoff performance, and declared that he would make sure that the employees have a very unhappy summers. Beyond that, though, he wanted to keep all his options open in the next few weeks. "You don't want to do anything when you're still as angry as I am," Wilson said, "but everything will be examined." In other words, almost every possibility will be examined because he hasn't decided (a) what he wants to do and (b) what he can do given the changing economy and market for his freshly embarrassed players. It is clear, though, that he wants the employees to feel his rage, to the point where his brief chat with the players Wednesday morning was delivered with considerable force and pointed one finger in 25 different directions.

Is it a Doug Wilson problem though? He has been the the guy who has signed all these players, drafted the players, traded for these players & hired the 2 head coaches (firing 1 of them). He has put together a talented team with talented fun to watch players. But that doesn't make them great or the right fit. He brought in Blake, Boyle (huge $$$), Lemiuex & hired a new coach...same result: playoff losses. The 2 consistent things in all of this is the Sharks playoff disgrace every season & the GM that put them together.

Sure, sure. Everyone knew throughout this season that the Sharks were going to lose their first two home games and get ousted in the first round by the eighth seed. The team that played in the regular season was a ridiculous team that just didn't show up in the playoffs. So, it's time to tweak a few things, not blow the team up. Previously I said Thorton and Marleau needed to stay, now I think one of them has to go. I think Cheechoo is useless without Thorton. Did Roenick, Pavelski, Lemieux, Moen, and setoguchi even play? Everyone's so quick to lay the blame at Joe's feet. Find two more puck moving defenders, mix speed with grit on the third and fourth lines, and find some help for thorton. But don't implode the team (like the leafs a while back) - and don't let the team get old (like the Avs).

As well as he should be. I would think any GM of the team the wins the President's Trophy would be furious after a first round loss.

Why shouldn't people do that, he (again) displayed uninspired play in the playoffs. It's like he doesn't know that things are amped up in the playoffs, including the physical play. He's a big bodied dude that doesn't necessarily play a physical game. Someone the other day said how easy it was for the Ducks to defend him: he always veered out to the wings and looked to pass the majority of the time. He doesn't seem to want to go into the dirty areas. And he's making $6.67 mil per year. He's supposed to be their money player, but the only money part of him is the contract.

Joe's play in the series was indeed inconsistant. Should the Sharks move him? Perhaps since it is clear that he plays like a Euro and doesn't like to get his nose dirty, that the team finally realize that and get him a couple of hard nosed wingers that can shoot and bang it up to create the space for his timely and perfect passes. Marleau may be another story. He looked absolutely terrible. Cheecho has some passion and is a fine 3rd liner. Let it also be noted, that the Ducks brought a heck a a game plan to the series. Sometimes even playing hard and tough is not enough...Iginla for example could never be accused of being soft...I think the answer for Joe is on the wings.

You mean Euros like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Holmstrom, etc ?

San Jose reminds me of the Ottawa Senators Stanley Cup run team. Loads of talent, just lacks the playoff gotta-win-at-all-costs mentality.
As far as the Euro stereotype, that is quickly being quashed now... Ovechkin, Fedorov, Datsyuk, well all of Detroit... Malkin, Kreijci, Jokinen, Sedin & Sedin, Gonchar, even guys who didn't make the playoffs have heart... However, that being said, I still think Canada produces the most "know how to win" players in the world.

Have to disagree. Do you think this team does not have enough to win? This one is not on the gm

That is very accurate! Jason Blake unfortunately does not possess the skill of Ovechkin though...
