West: Hornets need more scorers

07:34 AM ET 05.01 | After a first-round playoff elimination that included a 58-point loss in Game 4 to the Denver Nuggets, Hornets forward David West not only expects changes to come this summer, he says they are needed. Though the Hornets struggled with injuries throughout the season, West said their most glaring problem was not having enough options to turn to other than point guard Chris Paul. With an inconsistent bench, West and Paul had to play extended minutes during the regular season. They also had little help in the playoffs other than James Posey and Sean Marks off the bench. Even before the playoffs began, there was speculation the Hornets intend to revamp their roster by trading to get under the luxury tax. Starting center Tyson Chandler, who sat out Game 5 on Wednesday night because of a sore left ankle, could be one of the players Bower may look to move to provide needed depth in the frontcourt.

i agree the way they got smashed they need some guys that can put up some points cuz i never expected them to get bashed the way they did

They just could not take the next step from last year. Maybe that was their peak?

May 1, 2009  08:25 AM ET

I guess that means Peja Stojakovic is done.

May 1, 2009  08:32 AM ET

They need a healthy Stojakovic (impossible), a shooting guard (Butler is a backup 3) and solid bench production througout the season. Chandler, West and of course Paul are set...

Who will they add? Without Chandler won't West's lack of size be even more prevalent?

The Hornets need to make some changes. When you get blown out by 58 in the playoffs, something important is missing (maybe leadership & heart).

Not that he's the answer, but I thought they had Mo-Pete?

Peja has been done nicksfan.

A couple of years ago he would have been a valid option.

Wait. Didn't they already try to trade Chandler? Did his toe all of a sudden get better, or did the doctors looking at it get worse?

May 1, 2009  09:24 AM ET

After losing at home by 58 points it would seem that this team is truly a one man band.
Donte Jones of all people owning Chris Paul?
Really?
I would have never thought that.
Held to 4 points in that game?
I always said Deron Williams was better am sure people see it now.
Now then Hamilton and Prince would seem to be the best candidates for this team.
Will they let Mo go, Chandler or West?
We will see this upcoming summer!

They should go HARD after Artest.....
- you put him in NO witht hte current roster and they would be a FORCE

May 1, 2009  09:44 AM ET

They can get that this offseason and a few tweeks here and there well do them some good!

May 1, 2009  09:55 AM ET

They should call the blazers immediately, Outlaw, Sergio and Frye would look damn good next to paul and west. Chandler is gone whether you like it or not. Frye at the 5, West at 4, Outlaw at 3, sergio at 2 and paul at the 1. Pick up a couple of nice roll players and buyout Peja.

May 1, 2009  10:20 AM ET

Well, anytime Chandler is on the floor that means you already have only 4 scorers, cause Tyson isn't a good offensive player, secondly, when one of those players is Peja, who usually shoots threes and long twos and doesn't drive to the rim as much then he isn't gonna be a high scorer.

Not a bad idea. Artest has proven his critics wrong BIG TIME this season. Last night he was a key player.

The sad thing about all of this was that after the playoffs last season I really thought the Hornets would be a force to deal with THIS year. While the Mavs have OVER ACHIEVED the Hornets have for sure under achieved. I would have never bet that we would have finished a higher seed than the Hornets this season, even more so with the injuries we fought off. Just look at what appears to be a joke of a bench in Dallas and how they have produced. Maybe they will get smashed by Denver as well but who would have guessed that a small PG like JJ Barea (sp?) would be slashing to the rim during the playoffs to help his team get out of the first round? Not me.

They had a scorer last year on their roster...D-League's Trey Johnson...but they let him go to keep an "open" spot which they didn't fill till months later. Byron Scott told him that he was a greater scorer, but that's not what they needed. Meanwhile Trey averages 25pts a game in the D-league.

yeah- maybe a little over-achieving- but the Mavs have been
basically what I thought they'd be a 2nd round playoff team

NO certainly had an impressive run with all their injuries- but
if healthy & they find a nice 2 guard- they ABSOLUTELY can
get back with Paul running the show

- I know nothing about him- but it's the D League.......
it's basically like college-
Adam Morrison scored 25 a night in college & he can't even get on the floor in the NBA
