The National Football League is ready to take the extraordinary step of awarding the Super Bowl, America's iconic sporting showpiece, to London within the next eight years, Telegraph Sport understands. Representatives from the Mayor of London's office and Visit London, the city's official visitor organisation, has received assurances from the NFL that, after two sell-out regular-season games at Wembley Stadium and a third scheduled for Oct 25, there is a commitment to bring the championship game to the capital in 2014. The NFL's special events team, headed by Frank Sopowitz, has looked at Canada, Mexico, Germany and the UK as potential destinations outside the United States but identified London as the outstanding candidate. It is expected to announce officially within the next 12 months that a Super Bowl will be staged across the Atlantic, with London standing to gain up to $350 million from hosting the event.

Doesn't surprise me, might as well give that away too. Whats next, the Indy 500 on the Autobahn? The Kentucky Derby in Rome?

I'd wager the Networks will charge extra for American Fans to watch.

This is stupid. In the economy the way it is why would the NFL alienate an American city that could use the revenue stream that the Super Bowl brings with it.Irresponsible at best.

The NFL has been trying to go world wide for quite some time. It's all about money to them, not who they offend in the process.
Very similar to our government.

May 3, 2009  08:42 AM ET

Great idea! Maybe the Premier League Final should be played in New York? That'd go just as well, right?

May 3, 2009  08:42 AM ET

That's a bunch of garbage. The NFL doesn't care about all the sites it could be held like Atlanta,,Dallas St. Louis ,Minnesota ,Detroit,Indianapolis or the econemy of OUR country. All they care about is the next big opening to start another watered down Euorpean leauge.

I think the Scottish Hurling Championship is in the Superdome this year.

May 3, 2009  08:51 AM ET

The Superdome would be great. Maybe they can have a Cricket championship the same week! Can you hear the cha-chings?

Totally. If you can show 32 owners how they can make more money by playing the game in Hungary, then that is where they would play it. I just don't see it. The money part that is.

Sadly 50, this is the state of our country.

This country is going through a tough time. Why would the NFL basically send a 350 million dollars to london??? When they do I am done with the NFL. If someone in London wants to watch the super bowl live then they should buy a plane ticket and fly here to see it.

The networks will run pay per view on us,,,, you just watch it happen.

what the &*@$@ goodel needs to be fired now. we are not having the super bowl in london. give them the pro bowl or something

May 3, 2009  09:16 AM ET

Whatever, not like I could afford to get tickets anyway and its not like football fans actually go to the super bowl. It's mostly corporate anyway. As long as they keep it in HD and not PPV they can play it anywhere they want.

Is the NFL aware that you cannot own a handgun in London? You could leave with 53 players and come back with 40. They better think this through.

If you pay attention, you'll find that the world now owns the US,,, not "We the People" Hopefully I'll be dead before they start calling their markers in.
Did you happen to notice that 1/3 of Obamas budget had to be borrowed from other nations?

God Help Us.

Do you realize with the London time zones, the game would have to be played from 1 am to 4 am, for it to be a prime time 8 pm - 11 pm show in the US!
