Why Crennel passed on another team

08:55 AM ET 05.03 | Romeo Crennel is stepping back and taking a big-picture view. For the first time since 1981, he won't be coaching in the NFL, and the former Patriots defensive coordinator acknowledged he's not sure how he'll handle it. Crennel's decision to sit out isn't due to a lack of interest from teams. He surely would have been a coup for a team such as Kansas City, with former Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli in his first year there as general manager and Todd Haley taking over as head coach. Denver, where former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is in his first year as coach, would have been another natural option. But health, primarily, dictated Crennel's course of action. He had hip replacement surgery in February - a month after he was fired as head coach in Cleveland - and decided that he'd focus solely on rehab. That meant that the only coaching opportunity he'd seriously consider was returning to the Browns in a different role.

I wish him well. He is a good man, and a good football guy. Just not HC material it seems. But you could say that about half the coaches in the League.

I watched everyone of Romeo's games. I watched many of his press conferences and read many of his "statements."
We have a true gentleman, a man of principle and kindness. Seeing him go was difficult. The lack of discipline on the o line was glaring, the inability of the defense to tackle was sickening, the play selection was stultifying. Yet, Romeo was a good, kind human being. No some lawn-mower coach consuming the people around in some melee to deflect attention from his failures.

....the Browns may have sucked last year, but in the NFL, it is very easy to go from worst to first in 1 year. And it is always a team least expected.

I don't think he has time to coach, being one of the contestants on next year's The Biggest Loser (at least until he finds out it's about losing weight, not about his record...and whopping .375 winning percentage).

Except he signed an extension the year before which means he likely is getting paid for NOT coaching unless he took a buy out payment in which he banked the money. In any case, he made enough to not need "a job."
He was a true gentlemen. Unfortunately that may not make for a great Head Coach. The Browns did lack discipline under his reign. That said, I am disappointed that the Browns would not give him one more year without getting a coach with a proven winning track record (which Mangini is NOT), to see if it was just a setback. Also, disappointed that Mangini would not keep him on as an assistant hen he stated he would take a lesser role. Good coach, quality person, possibly just not a good HC.
Now the Browns are truly in a rebuild mode as Mangini tears apart and tries to rebuild. Belichick was a horrible coach for the Browns and went on to be a great!! I hope Mangini can learn from his NYJ screw ups and become a much better coach in Cleveland. But not going to hold my breath.
