Owner: New Broncos coach made 'rookie mistakes'

In a wide-ranging exclusive interview, his first since a chaotic series of events began in mid-December, Broncos' owner and CEO Pat Bowlen declares: Even now, he doesn't understand why former quarterback Jay Cutler wouldn't return his calls and wanted out of Denver. The Broncos will "probably not" win the Super Bowl next season. He would have preferred that the Broncos had drafted more defensive players last weekend. He has not spoken to Mike Shanahan since he fired him. He has turned over additional organizational responsibilities to chief operating officer Joe Ellis. He has "absolutely" no plans to sell the franchise. His new coach, Josh McDaniels, committed "rookie mistakes," but he fully supports him and is growing more assured he will be outstanding in the long term. His health "is good," but he has experienced "short-term memory loss" in recent months.

Pat Bowlen has to be one of the best owners in the NFL. He was left with no choice in the Cutler circus affair. Sometimes triage is the only thing you can do. Stop the bleeding and go from there. The only real mistake he made was to guarantee so much to Shanahan. The guy just did not get his team to perform well enough the last en years to warrant that kind of security. But a deal is a deal.

Experiencing short-term memory loss: He really wants to forget everything that's happened in the last couple of months.

It reads like Bowlen is giving McDaniels the same vote of confidence reserved for guys who are *this close* to getting fired.

This guy is a doorknob bro!

I see the Denver Horses going 4-12 next year.

May 4, 2009  08:39 AM ET

Look at it this way. They went 8-8 lst year and 24-24 their last three years. Bowlen is not really taking that big of a gamble, and Josh McDaniels has a good chance to keep the Broncos as they were for the last three years, maybe even improve them. They did not play inspired football down the stretch last year. Blame the coach and the players..

On that picture, McDaniels is explaining/telling the congregation " with emphasis" how many times he'll go to the playoffs....

Can you get fired before you coach one game because if anyone deserves too... this guy right here takes the cake.

he can still run a franchise look at Al Davis he does not let a silly little thing like memory loss affect him.

Question was How Many points Coach McDaniels you think you guys are going to score this year? Next Question How many Wins? Next question How did you get this Job? I was riding in the middle of the two higher ups and they dropped there pants and I acted like I was sking just like this.

AAAAhhhhh shoot me now.....

"The Broncos will "probably not" win the Super Bowl next season"

Can you say, Understatement of the Season? A horrible defense that received little help in the draft. Losing your franchise quarterback. A coach that thinks he's genius because he got coffee for Bill B in NE. These guys are doomed for the forseeable future.

Good for Bowlen for stepping up, but it was his moves that derailed this train of mediocrity in the first place. They're gonna be looking back on the glory of an 8-8 season like Yankee fans look back at the 50s.

The Broncos just Killed Denver Football............. When we look back at the mistakes the release of a great head coach, the disrespect which drove Cutler out and the player issues going on in Denver! After this coming up season you too will know THE BRONCOS KILLED DENVER FOOTBALL!
