Favre promised Jets he'd only play for Vikings

Because the Jets, who still owned the rights to Brett Favre after his retirement, granted Favre his outright release, he's free to sign with any team without the Jets receiving compensation. Though the Jets didn't return a call last night, it is believed that when they granted him his release, Favre promised them that if he returned it would be only to play for the Vikings -- not a competing AFC East team with a vacancy caused by major injury.

This is not the way to start off a day. where's my knife?

May 6, 2009  06:42 AM ET

This guy is a joke. I hope the Packers never retire his #. I wouldn't shed a tear either if his comeback led to being carted off the field on a stretcher.

May 6, 2009  06:42 AM ET

Like a Favre promise is worth anything.

Time to take "Old Yeller " out to the woods

May 6, 2009  07:05 AM ET

And here I thought this was finally over.. pfft. In a few years, when he does eventually retire, he'll probably go into coaching. Then, in another 10 or 20 years we'll be able to go through this some more when he's debating retirement from coaching.

Knife? More like a shotgun.

Well......my personal decision of the day.......do I take a bullet to the head, or do I hang myself? WOW......thought he needed surgery to play again? And does seeking revenge against his former team really the right move for him/legacy?

Oh....the legacy is still going to be his stammering like a 3 year old to get released from Green Bay.

His temper tantrum then is still legendary. The cousins talking to the media. The whole "respect" garbage.

Give it up Brett. Now u just look stupid.

May 6, 2009  07:23 AM ET

He promised me he'd retire.

Another day, another Favre story. Favre1N1 is running rampant.

May 6, 2009  07:36 AM ET

Seriously, if you don't like the story so much why don't you ignore it. Some people actually do like Favre, I know, we are crazy, but let us be. I am a packer fan and a Favre fan and I would like Favre to get a shot on a team with a lot of weapons just to see. I have always been curious if the reason he didn't win more titles was because of the team or him. Lets face it, GB has never had a super star running back. Don't say Green or Levens. They proved to be average at best when they left GB. Also, he has never had a superstar wide out. Walker showed what kind of ability he had in Denver, which was not much. This Favre to vikings is very intriguing.

How many Jet fans have died from Favre1N1? That last time I heard, it was zero. :-D)))

May 6, 2009  07:38 AM ET

F ! it Brett..... Just come on.

Farve = Great

Everyone Else = Suck

We get it. Do you have a reservation on the Madden Cruiser or do you just drive behind it?

May 6, 2009  07:43 AM ET

Schadenfreude. Please re-read my post, and try to understand what I am saying before you rant. I am not saying Favre = great. I am saying I want to know if Favre = great. Everyone says Favre is great, which I am leaning towards, but I would like him to go to a stocked team and see if ...

Favre = great and
everyon else = suck

Come on. No matter how much you dislike someone why wish someones career ends in injury? I can't stand Favre, and don't want him on the Vikings. My dislike comes from him playing with the Packers and having to listen to their fans telling me how great he was. I never wished him injury though. That's bush league.

There's nothing that says the Pack HAS to retire his number. If Brett does play for the Vikes, or anyone else this season, Favre will retire for good long before the Pack retires his number.
