Lame duck Scott on Hornets' hot seat?
The term is "lame duck," and it's what Hornets Coach Byron Scott officially has become, now that majority owner George Shinn's offseason evaluation is complete, and part of the result is that Scott will be back for the final year of his contract. Whether Scott earned the distinction by not winning enough or Shinn pushed him into it by knee-jerking after the recently completed season is a matter of debate. What isn't is that by not giving Scott an extension, and allowing him to enter the final year of his contract and "evaluating" him all season (which is a nice way of saying he'll be on a short leash and probably will be fired at the first sign of trouble), Scott is little more than a lame duck with the Hornets. Players thumb their noses at coaches who are in the final year of their contracts. Players ignore coaches who are in the final year of their contracts. Players orally challenge coaches who are in the final year of their contracts. Players sprint to management with their gripes rather than work out their grievances with coaches who are in the final year of their contracts. In other words, good rarely sprouts from such a situation -- and it's a disservice to Scott and to the Hornets.

That's a good spot to be in matter of fact. You have 5 mil guaranteed. The whole world knows you are a good coach. If I was him I'd plead to be fired. The Hornets must be insane to even think of firing him. It's like the Heat threatening to trade Wade cos they didn't win a championship this year after adding great Jermaine O'Neal and his 42 million contract - I know deep down Pat Riley feels that way :)

This news is slow and stupid because they actually extended his contract already. It's on ESPN.

Exactly, these is a lot of b/s going on with the Hornets right now but this isn't one of them. Lame duck? He's a professional. Another way to look at it is "contract year."

Scott's a great coach. His players played with no heart or desire this season. CP3 can only do so much.

I wonder about this. First there is the story about him going to Sacramento. Then there is the story about him replacing Jackson in LA. Now there is a story about him being a lame duck even though there is supposed to be a contract extension. What is pushing all these stories?

Nawlins' got problems, but coaching isn't one of them. Somebody has to play the scapegoat but I don't expect it'll be the Byron Scott. Somebody (read Detroit) will take David West and a terrible contract (Peja or Chandler) in return for some talent (Hamilton or Prince) and an extra pick or two.

Guam Baller - They didn't extend his contract. He was already under contract till the end of the 2009-2010 season.

The whole team was injured. Coaching doesn't matter much if your players can't jump.

Scott had the nets playing hard, then they quit on him, He had the horrnets playing hard, then it seems they quit on him too.
both the team and the coach needs to work this out, It don't help them to both blame the other or try to get rid of the other. Coaches who don't learn, leave. Players who get thier coaches fired, usually wind up like penny hardaway, no one wants you and your carreer is over. So, sit, talk, work. pretend your both being paid big bucks, pretend your there for the "love of the game" or for the "fans" Work it out and move on.
Life is too short. Work it out, then get thejob done.

I think if I were Byron Scott I wouldn't mind getting fired either. There are too many teams in the NBA who'd be interested his services. Every franchise he's coached has managed to climb out of the cellar and into the playoffs.
If I'm an owner/GM of the T-Wolves, Pacers, Grizzlies, or that D-League team in Oklahoma, I want Scott to get fired from the Hornets too!
