Shaq training for MMA?
It seems that everywhere, people are catching on to the benefits of learning mixed martial arts. Everyone includes basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal, who is spending his off-season training at Jonathan Burke's Gracie Gym in Orlando. O'Neal, who is listed at 7'2" and 325 lbs., goes by his old nickname at the gym, Diesel. He's been training with Burke for 10 years, where he does the full gamut of MMA, boxing, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and wrestling. Cagewriter spoke with Burke who said that O'Neal is in great shape, and loves the nature of the training. "We can work drills 20 times through, and he works his tail off on everything," Burke said. "He has way more talent with this stuff than people would imagine."

This article doesn't jump to conclusions or make far-fetched assumptions at all. Shaq trying to stay in shape = Shaq trying to become a professional fighter. Yes sir.

One could only dream that he brings Shaq Fu to the masses.... but this is certainly not gonna happen. He'll be 40 before he hangs it up in the NBA... he wouldn't get much by way of an MMA career at that point...

Unless, I suppose, they allowed Shaq to fight with a cane. Then I could see him bringing the hurt.

"He has way more talent with this stuff than people would imagine."
Gee, I'm sure that's completely true, and you're not saying it because a MULTI multi millionaire is training with you, paying you boatloads of cash. Better watch out Rashad Evans, the Diesel is gonna eat you up! Seriously could you imagine that? Shaq = Kimbo + 8 years.
I'm sure Shaq is just staying in shape in different ways. If he steps in the octagon he would get absolutely destroyed.

while i don't think there is any real speculation about shaq-fu making a move into the mma arena i always wonder about certain athletes and the type of skills they possess and how they would crossover or fair in mma.
granted, i understand that it takes a very special type athlete to excel at multi-sports but it always makes me wonder what if they started training early and focused on mma while in their peak.........just a thought.
for example i look at some nfl players with their size, speed, and power comparable or in a lot of cases exceeds that of lesnar how they would do inside a cage. i understand lesnar has a world class wrestling background but I can't help but wonder 'what if'

I'd think that any top flight athlete in any sport could transfer that talent to another sport. Kobe Bryant grew up in Italy, playing soccer. He's still got those skills, and probably could've gone pro in that sport as easily as basketball. Certainly, exactly what you're saying about when you start training in an additional sport plays a factor.... but a good athlete is a good athlete.

I think is simply a matter of his wanting to cross-train and of being a fan. You can usually see Shaq in the audience at the bigger MMA events.

Shaq isn't fighting anyone. He's been doing this for 10 years and it's barely coming out? In 10 years he should be a black belt in BJJ.

All those commercials about "Icy Hot strips" lead me to believe...this ain't gonna happen.

Yeah remember Kareem was into kung fu also or Jeet kun do ,,,, as Lee called it. I imagine Shaq is as good as he was,,,,,that is ,,,big and slow. Not to mention Shaq isnt the brightest bulb in the ring,,,,oh wait maybe he would be in the ring.

Nowhere is suggested that Shaq would fight MMA professionally.
We just likes to train MMA. I can relate to that.

This is ridiculous.
Shaq has nothing to prove in the Octagon.
Training to stay in good skilled, physical condition is one thing.
Training to earn a living in the ring is another.
Shaq has no need for the latter.
Lol...

Shaq wasn't in great shape last year. He carried far too much weight. This is just a spurrious article with a well paid, lap dog, gushing trainer quoted. Maybe the reporter is a gushing lap dog as well.
