Riley: Heat hopes to extend D-Wade

06:02 AM ET 05.07 | Although the goal for the Heat has long been to create as much salary-cap space as possible to sign two superstars in 2010, the priority is to get half of that work done now. Heat president Pat Riley laid out his offseason itinerary Wednesday. And atop the agenda was signing Dwyane Wade to a contract extension that would keep the team's marquee player in Miami through the 2014-15 season. Riley put forth a blueprint with Wade as the centerpiece now and in the future. Wade, the NBA's scoring champion who finished third in MVP voting, has one guaranteed season remaining on his contract and could opt out of his deal next summer, when several other superstars could be free agents. But Riley said Wednesday he would like to lock up Wade well before he can hit the open market in what could be the NBA's biggest free-agency frenzy ever.

From a strictly basketball contract stance, resigning this summer is the best option for all the 2010 max deal guys. It will guarantee them the most money because the max deal is determined by the cap and the cap is comming down. Now of course there are other issues involved but I would be surprised if someone resigns this summer.

If Dwayne Wade wants to win, he'll wait out, take a pay cut, and play for Cleveland.

May 7, 2009  07:56 AM ET

Miami is not serious about assembling a championship team - they got Marion, then Jermaine O'Neal - yikes! why would he resign now? He doesn't need that extra 2 - 5 mil the higher cap will give him. He can easily recoup that making fun of Barkely on TV.

Play for Cleveland. Dreaming you mus be dreaming!!!

May 7, 2009  08:00 AM ET

Cleveland is risking loosing Lebron to NY. They need to address their own superstar.

May 7, 2009  08:04 AM ET

They gathered those players because their contracts run out in 2010 so the can sign anothe superstar (amare, boozer, bosh, lebron). I believe this is a great idea, giving the rest of the free agent class another incentive to come to miami.

It will be a wise move it they did extend his contract this summer. It will be a lot cheaper if they do because they won't have to compete w/ any other team if he opts out next year. He has proven his worth and has brought the Heat a ring already. If he opts out next year then it will be hard to keep him at a premium price. Teams will bid for his service and it will jack up his price which will make it hard for Miami to match.

Wade will be back. He can get paid more there. Besides, Miami's got a good thing going with Wade and Beasely.

Guam- he has a MAX deal coming-
no matter how high any other team bids- Miami can give more
that's the whole point as to why teams sign & trade and why
the team that drafted you (or has your rights) has the advantage

Miami should ABSOLUTELY try and sign him now because then they
can plan on building pieces around him-
if they can't - and they assemble a complimetary squad around
Wade & if he bolts- they are in serious trouble

May 7, 2009  09:07 AM ET

I think he'll wait and test the market!

I know he has a max deal coming only if he opts out. The Heat have to extend him to a max deal now or else they will lose him when he opts out or they will pay him more then they can afford. The Heat are only competing for DWade this summer by themselves compared to him opting out next year. If they sign him to a long term now then they can build around him w/ more salary cap room compared to next year. If he opts out next year and the Heat signs him to a crazy contract then their salary cap would be at a minimum and it will be harder to lure some good free agents to build around him.

May 7, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Why is this even a story? Of course the Heat should have this as a priority.

LOL

yeah, this is really a no-brainer. guys like dwade don't come along too often. he's the absolute truth!! he can put the team on his back, closes games, and is a underrated defender. he is the epitome of a franchise player!

To all you Cleveland Fans. Do you really believe that Lebron wants to stay in a depressing city like Cleveland? He is going to go to a much bigger better market like New York. I would say L.A. but Kobe doesn???t play well with other superstars. Miami would be a nice fit for Lebron but it will always be D Wades team and I???m not sure if Lebron would want to share the spotlight. If you do get the Wade-Lebron combination you are talking about the next five NBA championships locked up.

the money will be the same regardless-
if they sign him now or them- its MAX
- they'd absolutely be competing agaist other teams- but not for $$
- only if wade WANTS OUT- is the problem then it's not $$$ that's
the issue it's the fact he wants to go elsewhere

lets say detroit came calling - they can offer say 15 mil per
if miami re-signs him now- they can offer say 18 per as a max
if miami waits- they STILL can offer the same 18 per
they aren't bidding against themselves

Yep.

Teams don't let super stars go because of money unless they are facing economic hardships...

Why would he want to take a pay cutt just to play with Lebron while Lebron gets a max deal, he is just as good as Lebron, Dwade can carry a team and put up big numbers night in and night out

no way he would take less to play with LBJ
now if they BOTH take less & go somewhere..........say NYC....:)
well that's a whole different matter
