Russell: Knicks may have damaged Marbury

Bill Russell believes Stephon Marbury can continue to help the Celtics in the playoffs -- if he's able to get over what the Knicks did to him. "If it's up to the team, he'll have a positive effect," the 75-year-old NBA legend told The Post yesterday at the NBA Store in midtown. "But you don't know how much he's been damaged psychologically playing here." "Here" of course, is with the Knicks, where his rocky tenure came to a disastrous end when it became clear that coach Mike D'Antoni had no intention of playing him and team president Donnie Walsh long refused to buy him out of his $21 million contract. When asked if he thought the point guard indeed had been "damaged psychologically" by the Knicks, Russell said: "He may have been. No matter how strong you are, that kind of stuff that went on this season was so ridiculous." After suiting up in the preseason, Marbury was banished to the bench and later told to stay away from the team before finally being bought out and signing with the Celtics on Feb. 27. "I think what the Knicks did to him, having the whole thing play out in the papers [was wrong]," said Russell.

"Damaged psychologically" sounds like another word for feelings hurt. Under his Knicks contract Steph made more in a month or two then most of us will make in a lifetime. I have a hard time feeling sorry for him, or for that matter feeling that he was wronged in anyway.

He's been so for all his career

May 7, 2009  07:09 AM ET

What the f is this garbage? The knicks damaged him psychologically, so he can't play in boston? He plays a game for living.

Man, I've had some bad experiences with some jobs, but I leave it behind when I switch jobs.

May 7, 2009  07:52 AM ET

marbury sucks he cant score like he used to he cant defend either. its over hes not a starting point guard anymore... if anything the knicks should have put a mob hit on marbury for what he did to the knicks

May 7, 2009  07:54 AM ET

Another NY Post pro Marbury story. Walsh refused to buy him out? I remember Marbury wanting his full pay, not a buyout for less money which most players do. He wanted to sit rather than taking less money, so be a man live with the consequences.

May 7, 2009  07:58 AM ET

I think the Knicks DID damage him, and said many times that was their aim.

Players need to play to keep their skills honed. He sat on the bench for a full season. Without injury. They kept him there because he wouldn;t decrease his contract and they wouldn't release him either.

He burned bridges. And one has burned him. Russell is right, but unlike him, I think Marbury has a goiod portion of the responsibility.

May 7, 2009  08:24 AM ET

I do agree Walsh and D'Antoni played with his head but he deserved it given what he put the Knicks organization through.

Bill Russell should have just gotten him a shrink on the low instead of telling the whole world Marbury is mentally incapable of getting over the Knicks ordeal on his own.

And I'm not trying to blame Mike and Walsh for this - Bill Russell should know Marbury was already messep up in the head before Walsh got here - they just didn't suck up to him. The last time a coach that kept Marbury around he lost his dream job and the last GM that did that was left popping pills. The new regime just didn't want to repeat history - the learned from it.

May 7, 2009  08:37 AM ET

They both damaged themselves psychologically and the Knicks continue to do that. I feel sorry for Lebron if he goes to NY. Lebron will be damage also. This is another reason why Lebron won't go to NY. Look at A-Roid.

Bill, bill.....I won't say anything negative about arguably the
most successful player EVER in team sports (and a good guy)
but come on-
it's a man's game- maybe steph's simply past his prime?
ever think of that ?

May 7, 2009  09:10 AM ET

Damaged??? By collecting a 20,840,625 dollar check to kick it at the crib? 20 Million, and your trying to make Stephon out as a victum.

The fact is if Stephon wanted to stay in game shape, and keep his edge, timing, etc. He should have arranged a proper buyout. He opted to sit out & take the money.

Stephon Marbury sucks big hairy donkey balls as a result to his decision. What was he 1 for 7 last night with 2 points through 20 Minutes?

Walsh refused to buy him out cause Steph only offered 1 Million dollars as a buyout. I wish the best for him, but as of now he is shooting 27% from the floor and 28% from 3 point range, and Celtics fanboys honestly don't think this is a major reason why they almost got beat by the Bulls?

May 7, 2009  09:13 AM ET

No offense to Bill but he should quit smoking what ever he is smoking. Marbury did this to himself. He is an egomaniac, a self proclaimed the best point guard in NBA. Not just in NY, he did not want to play in Mn because Garnett was the leader. Now look what happened, He is playing with Kevin Garnett from the bench. Karma is a Biyatch.

May 7, 2009  09:20 AM ET

So let me get this straight. NY damaged him by letting all this "play out in the papers", but then Russell is complaining in the papers about how much psychologically broken Marbury is to the PAPERS!!!!

Wow.

May 7, 2009  09:27 AM ET

Both are to blame, they both suck.

May 7, 2009  09:28 AM ET

I think the cheese slipped off Bill's cracker... Marbury was psychotic prior to joining the Knicks. Things only escalated there cuz of one Isaiah Thomas. What a circus act it was having both of them together in NY!

Ha! True irony. As I've said before, subtraction of a negative is a positive, but on the flip side addition of a negative is still negative.

May 7, 2009  09:33 AM ET

Russell must be going senile. Marbury buried himself. I seem to recall Marbury hitting the papers first. I am hoping the Celtics lose just because Marbury is on their team.

Guam Baller- LOL the Knicks didn't create the Marbury mess, they payed him every dime they owed him. Even though he was banished to the end of the bench early on D'antoni called upon him 2x to enter a game and the baby refused. Entering either game might have given him his playing time back.

May 7, 2009  09:39 AM ET

you can't blame steph for holdout for his money... If you are gauranteed 20 mil and your able to play and you honor your contract but the team doesn't play you then thats they're fault. but put yourself in steph's $15 shoes... this is your last season making 20 mil bc no team will sign him for that much ever again... if he takes a buyout at the knicks price, he loses most of his 20mil and won't be able to recoup any of it if he signs with another team.

i bet 100% of you would of done the same

Don't view it as though he's all to blame in this. Equally to blame is D'Antoni and those Sherlock Holmes' in upper management. The types of moves they have been making just shows their incompetence!

May 7, 2009  09:58 AM ET

as much damn money he made to sit and do nothing?!

ha, id be hurt too. lmao.

Actually I can honestly say I would have attempted a buyout. When it comes to the whole Boozer situation and taking 70 Mill over 39 Million for your FIRST major contract in the league, I would have done the same thing.

The big difference is Marbury has been cashing HUGE checks for 13 years!!! If he would have offered 6 Mill, right off the bat. Walsh would have taken that in a second. What's is 6 or 8 Million to somebody that has made almost 300 Million dollars for his career.

Lets say he offered 8 Million, as a result.....He get to recoup some of that money by the team that picks him up this year. Also having the ability to play ball all year, retaining his abilities, and showing off his skill for next years free agency. He averaged 22 PPG & 8 ASS PG before this season. Lets say he averaged even 12 and 4. He would have gotten a REALLY decent deal still in free agency, probably making more than the 8 Mill he was trying to keep in the first place over the next 3 years!

Don't forget he only played 20 games the year before. I personally would have done what it takes to get back on the floor.
