Paterno not ready to retire

With each passing season, speculation develops about exactly when Joe Paterno will retire. On Tuesday, Penn State's 82-year-old football coach reiterated that he's not going anywhere, and hopes his successor isn't appointed until after he leaves. In a meeting with reporters before a speech to Washington area Penn State alumni at an Arlington hotel, Paterno said he still plans to coach three or four more seasons. Having recovered from knee and hip injuries that bothered him the past two seasons made coaching this spring more enjoyable, he said. Until he no longer enjoys coaching, Paterno will remain on the sideline with the Coke-bottle glasses and rolled-up khakis.

Sweet Jesus...he doesn't even wear a headset, carry a clipboard, send signals or plays in, nothing! He retired a long time ago.

He'll get in a player's face at practice but he hasn't been a game day coach for some time now. He's more of a symbol of tradition. He still draws players. Kids still want to play for him. And since he isn't paid the millions other coaches are making, the school can afford to keep a coach who doesn't really coach. Also, he does a lot for the State College Community and for Penn State academics. He's good for the school. He enjoys what he does. The football team is winning. Why would either side want to quit?

2 Big Ten titles in 4 years, an Orange Bowl win and a Rose Bowl appearance and Joe looks great. We should all be so lucky to look as good as he does at 82. Of course he hasn't retired!!

Why would he retire? He would lose his skybox seat. It is unconscionable that he counts wins where he was at the hospital in bed or where he sat in the skybox and didn't even go down at halftime.
What about the game where he went to the toilet at 14-7and missed the second half- Galen Hall put up 42 points while he was gone. Paterno is a control freak and the only way he will leave is in a hearse. Quit asking him about retirement.

Sour grapes from a Bowden apologist?

Better hope the NCAA reverses the vacating of wins decision, your boy will need to coach from a coffin to catch Paterno if they don't.

Sure looks to be a bit of jealousy. Paterno may have some trouble gametime but he sure as heck is having success in the recruiting this year.

Has a Florida State football player ever graduated? Does Bowden even know? Does he care?

Paterno is like "Bear" Bryant. If he retires, he'll be dead in two months.

May 7, 2009  09:02 AM ET

I think JoePa is great.

The only reason he coached from the sky box? Injured showing Special Teams how to do a proper on-side kick. He's the Balls.

Not only that, but he has made only one recruiting trip in at least the last 3 years. The lone trip was for Terrelle Pryor. You're right. He is nothing more than a figure head and only just this side of a mascot. His assistants run the show and without the uncertainty of his tenure and how he refuses to give recruits any idea of what will happen to PSU football after he dies in his sleep at any moment now, those guys would probably be able to win a National Championship. Those assitant coaches are very good, but they don't get enough top shelf talent. If they ever do, watch out. . .PSU will put it all together.

May 7, 2009  10:22 AM ET

And people claim Alabama wants to dig Coach Bryant up and wheel him onto the sidelines. I don't think it is sour grapes to point out he really isn't doing the work to earn his wins.

Ever hear of Myron Rolle? He received a Rhodes scholarship and put the NFL on hold to go into Medical Anthropology.

@MrBuckeye3 are you just upset that we keep beating OSU and taking the Big Ten Championship? I guess I would be upset if my team did not win a Bowl Game for the past 4 years. And your school has a total of 18 bowl wins, which is great...but JoePa as coach has 23 bowl wins, all with Penn State of course.

The #'s speak for themselves.

In your case, they spoke twice.

Nope. That was the little red guy with horns named Nick on the left shoulder. You should listen to the little white guy with the halo named Joe on the right shoulder.
