Gentry closing in on Suns deal

Interviews could not tell the Suns any more about Alvin Gentry than they knew from having him in the organization for five years. The final 31 games of the 2008-09 Suns' season was essentially Gentry's tryout as an interim head coach. After internal uneasiness with previous coach Terry Porter, the players all put in votes for Gentry to remain coach, and the front office was in concert. The only thing that remained were negotiations with Gentry, who met with Suns General Manager Steve Kerr over the past two days to bring the sides closer to lifting the interim tag from his head coach title. "It's all going well," Kerr said. "We've had productive conversations the last couple days. Hopefully, we'll get something done. We've got the ball rolling. We just have to keep the discussion going and hopefully get something done soon." Gentry is not looking elsewhere and the Suns are not pursuing other candidates.

another great regular season but early exit in the playoffs for the Suns with that system.

good luck.........

What do you mean? Like next season? Or this past season? They didn't make the playoffs this year man. And they run a different system from when they had great regular seasons with early playoff exits.

I still think this would be a bad decision. Gentry has coached other teams in the past and he didn't get anywhere w/ them. The players may like him but they will also get tired because of the losses they will get under Gentry. His system is not gonna work.

And get eliminated in the first round again?

Until the Suns actively pursue a defensive scheme, their demise will continue to be short and swift!!!

May 8, 2009  11:03 AM ET

Another season of high scoring Suns basketball in full of effect but unfortunately the results will be the same. Meaning IF the Suns make the playoffs, they aren't going far.

May 8, 2009  11:09 AM ET

Lakers,Nuggets and Rockets will still be elite teams in the West next year, the Spurs and Blazers will be alot better next year and the Hornets,Jazz and Dallas are not title contenders but still are better than the suns, expect another #9 seed in the valley of the sun....lol!!! if not worse.....

At some point, the light has to come on. Maybe Gentry is up to the task. I think he's earned his shot.

Suns is over.
They need to start rebuilding.
Amare, Nash and Shaq are not taking this team nowhere. Kerr is indeed a moron.

May 8, 2009  02:32 PM ET

It feels as if Gentry's just a stop-gap for a bigger house-cleaning in the future. It's just to hold the suns in one piece but after 2010, this whole team is going to be rebuild

May 8, 2009  04:37 PM ET

Suns have many problems. Gentry is not one of them.

That defensive scheme was the reason their demise was short and swift.

this year they did not run the run and gun system all year. look at the 7 seconds or less system they ran since Nash arrived.
