10:32 AM ET 05.08 | To borrow a line from Woody Guthrie, they're sticking with the Union. That's going to be the name of the region's new pro soccer team, which will take the field wearing blue and gold, people familiar with those decisions confirmed yesterday. The long-awaited official announcement of the team name and colors is scheduled for Monday at City Hall. Union was picked as the name of Major League Soccer's 16th team after an exhaustive internal evaluation aimed at selecting a moniker that would be both modern and lasting. In choosing Union, the team hearkens to the city's part in the nation's founding and to the area's historic role in the American labor movement.

I dig the name and logo in general. Not sold on the snake though, maybe a picture of a tyranosaurus rex instead?

May 8, 2009  10:57 AM ET

I don't get the snake either. Maybe I'm ignorant, but what does a snake have to do with union?

May 8, 2009  10:59 AM ET

I suspect the snake is a pictorial allusion to the old Don't Tread on Me flags, as it looks very similar--just a slightly modernized and stylized version, being coiled and facing the same way. This ties in with the thirteen stars at the bottom, like the original colonies. It all refers to Philly's role in America's founding.

I like the name quite a bit--overtones of a traditional football name, yet with an American twist and emphasis to it.

I'm not sure about the colors--have to see what the strip looks like.

Pretty sure it's in reference to the Gadsden Flag (Don't Tread on Me), which goes back to the Revolutionary War, which in turn, I believe fits quite well with Philadelphia

May 8, 2009  11:05 AM ET

Perhaps it relates back to being one of the prominent cities of the Revolutionary War and thus the "Don't Tread on Me Snake"-- that's my guess. A picture of the liberty bell would have been okay but cheesy. I pic of Ben Franklin smoking a pipe would have been modern ;) Or maybe a key attached to a kite....

In general, I like the colors. Look forward to seeing the kit. "Union" isn't too shabby either. Just balance out the union theme, i hear that Vancouver will be changing their name to the Vancouver Scabs or the Vancouver Capitalist Pigs.

Quite the counter you are, I completey missed the significance of the stars. And the snake now makes a ittle more sense. I'm liking it even more now. Hope the uni's are nice.

D-Wreck, what the crap has been going on with you of late? I see that after 2500+ posts, you are getting a little loopy these days! I essentially leave T&R for a few months and come back to some straaaaange stuff. :)

Love the name and the logo. Like the colors, too. Course I tried a write-in campaign for the Philadelphia Boxers. It was sort of a loose association with several tangents: Rocky heart, freight train momentum/working class feel (don't say train wreck waiting to happen), Boxer Revolution (yeah, China, whatever), smash-mouth foot ball, etc. Guess no one liked it. sigh.

How about our new communist ties? 1. FC Union Berlin! Sister club, anyone?

The team slogan on the leaked adidas scarves reads "Iungite aut Perite" -- which is Latin for "Join or Die," one of the most famous political cartoons in American history as penned by Benjamin Franklin.

i would have liked the logo more if the shield and snake were not included.... the union moved to the bottom and its simply the team colors in the middle.... i think it would have been simple and cool.... to me it looks as though they tried to squeeze whatever they could in the logo....

to recap, the city on top, Union on the bottom, and the team colors filling in the circle in the middle

I really like the design of the logo. In general soccer teams have some pretty well designed stuff.

May 8, 2009  11:16 AM ET

Absolutely love all the references and overtones within the team name and club crest. The colors are nice as well, but would have been nicer if they were red, white and blue, which, obviously, would be another reference right there. Whatever, they've got a stadium in the works and should have a nice fanbase whose passion rivals that of Toronto, Seattle and Columbus. Hopefully they'll have a mini-rivalry with Redbulls and with United and all the other teams in the region. I'll try to get out to a few away matches, and now that Redbulls have another team within a few hour's drive, that'll make going to away matches as a whole supporter's group that much easier.

And that nickname is badass, much better than Goats (Chivas) or the Reds (TFC) or any of that nonsense.

"Come on you Snakes!"

I actually have to say the name is pretty good. I'm a little surprised. Much better than Philadelphia Liberty.

"The colors are nice as well, but would have been nicer if they were red, white and blue, which, obviously, would be another reference right there."

The 76ers beat them to it. Though I admit it looks like a University of Pittsburgh alum designed it (especially when you see the scarf).

alright guys, we really need to start reviewing our American history and Philadelphia's importance in it.

The rattlesnake had long been a symbol of resistance to the British in Colonial America. The phrase "Don't tread on me" was coined during the American Revolutionary War, a variant perhaps of the snake severed in segments labelled with the names of the colonies and the legend "Join, or Die" which had appeared first in Benjamin Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754, as a political cartoon reflecting on the Albany Congress.

The rattlesnake (specifically, the Timber Rattlesnake) is especially significant and symbolic to the American Revolution. The rattle has thirteen layers, signifying the original Thirteen Colonies. And, the snake does not strike until provoked, a quality echoed by the phrase "Don't tread on me." For more on the origin of the rattlesnake emblem, see the Gadsden flag.

May 8, 2009  11:40 AM ET

not 13 rattles though, looks like they missed the mark, actually none, looks more like a damn viper

May 8, 2009  11:47 AM ET

I dig it. Well done Philly.

May 8, 2009  11:50 AM ET

I'm thinking Nike is going to have a hissy fit with the snake...
It would be one thing if Philly would be outfitted with Nike but because adidas is the MLS kit provider...I would bet that logo is void of a snake when it is officially released.

Or it's going to be in a different design - too similar to the "Don't Tread on Me" slogan.
