Villanueva likely leaving Milwaukee

Former Milwaukee Bucks forward Ersan Ilyasova will face an interesting dilemma when it comes time to decide where he's going to play professional basketball next season. The 6-foot-9 Turkish forward, who played in Europe this season with Regal FC Barcelona, could probably make more money if he stayed overseas rather than return to the Bucks, who continue to hold his rights. However, there could be potential to earn extended playing time in Milwaukee since it's appearing unlikely that forward Charlie Villanueva will be back. Villanueva will be a restricted free agent this summer and, due to a lack of financial flexibility, the Bucks likely would have difficulty matching an offer sheet from another team. However, with word that the National Basketball Association's luxury-tax plateau will be dropping next season, the Bucks may not be able to afford to give Villanueva a qualifying contract offer that would allow them to retain his rights.

I'd welcome him back to the Raptors for the right price, but I doubt he'd sign for that low and I don't see a role for him on the team (unless they traded Bosh).

May 9, 2009  09:28 AM ET

Miami could let Blount go to get him.
CV31 to backup Haslem with Luther Head, Cook, Moon/Jones and Magloire.
a beast bench lineup!

Not a huge CV fan- but
looking at his stats- they ain't too shabby....
>it would be a shame for the bucks to simply let him go for
absolutely nothing in return-

I think the league is slowly phasing out those power forwards that play on the perimeter because they can't defend the 4 spot. Those players always have great stats but their teams don't do well due to the inefficiency of their style. Al Harrington is a prime example. So is Tim Thomas who was barely used in the playoffs.

So I can understand why Milwaukee wouldn't invest into Charlie. If you have a 6' 9'' frame you need to work on post moves, score in the paint, block shots and rebound else y'll become a liability and be expendable.

The patron saint of such players is Antione Walker who is justifiably out of the league.

Yea I know that.
But he can spread the floor and he isnt being used.
If your not gonna use the 3 point cigar then trade him.
This is not the time to pay guys for warming the bench.

May 9, 2009  10:57 AM ET

More than welcome back in Toronto! Is he cool with a bench role?

May 9, 2009  11:17 AM ET

He's Charmin soft but thinks he's an A-lister. Getting 15 points per game is one of the easiest tings in the league to replace. Let him walk to some team willing to overpay for his B-list services. Oh wait - it's the Bucks. They need to add another overpaid player to Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut...

Phoenix doesn't care. They would sign and trade this guy for J-Rich any day.

Meant Milwuakee would sigh and trade this guy for J-Rich

No surprise - Phoenix keeps going back and forth like Aaliyah... one minute its Shaq and Amare pounding the ball inside - next it's Iverson and Marbury attempting to share the ball with Steve Nash.

At $3.4 million, Villanueva is hardly overpaid. His 16 points and 7 rebounds would be a welcome addition in a lot of places. Milwaukee will have a hard time getting equal value for him, but they seem to be watching their purse-strings instead of the product.

MIL for next season : Redd $17m, Jefferson $14.2m, Bogut $12m = 43.2m + add Dan Gadzuric, bad contract $ 6.75m = $ 49.95m Next move on draft day : If Boozer does not opt-out, and Okur takes his ETO : Bogut $ 12m to Utah for Carlos Boozer $12.3m & the 1rd draft pick #20 this year

LMAO

Sloan must be drunk off of something stronger than Barcardi 151 for that to happen... are you kidding me?

I agree I don't believe they are "phasing them out" per-say, but I think GM's do want a banger these days that can control the paint.

On the flipside this kids stats are solid to say the least, and Hollywood is exactly right not only will it be hard to find a replacement at that price. It will be down right impossible to find a player for 3 Mill that can do 16 & 7 numbers.

Personally I would try to keep Redd, Sessions and Villanueva together.

I think they might made good bench players if they can play both forward sports, some maybe even the 5 at times, but for short stretches.

I don't know about that-
I think the entire league has gone AWAY from the 'power' game
it seems like every team has either a center or PF that's a
jumpshooter.....dirk, lewis, Pau, Okur,
actually the 'bangers' tend to be the 'under-sized' PFs

You bring up Harrington- and yes he's a PIG, no he plays no D
- but after watching him this past year- I Honestly can say
that he just might be one of the most talented scorers I have
seen play in the NBA- again- he's a pig & is stupid-
but he's almost un-guardable with his outside shot & ability
to get to the hole-
- I really think there would be ALOT of teams interested in him-
teams that need a scorer from the forward spot-
say SA, NO, Miami....
he absolutely comes with baggage- but on a veteran team-
I think he'd do well....especially in a contract year

without a doubt

Teams will be interested in him, but alot of them will want him as a 6th man, not a starter. His safest bet as a starter would be in Milwaukee. If he wants to contend in the playoffs, that is. Ramon Sessions, Michael Redd, Richard Jefferson, Charie Villanueva, and Andrew Bogut is definitely a playoff bound lineup.
