Hornets may have to deal players

Hornets president Hugh Weber told the New Orleans media Thursday the team was on solid financial ground and wasn't necessarily going to avoid the league's luxury tax if it meant breaking up a young and talented team. Speculation centers on the Hornets, who currently have around $76 million in salary commitments for next season. The salary cap is expected to drop to around $57 million next season because of the economy, but more important, the luxury tax threshold is expected to fall to $68 million, which kicks in a penalty for every dollar over the threshold. So to avoid paying the tax, it would appear that two of the team's better big men, David West and Tyson Chandler, would be prime candidates to be moved. Hornets executive Chad Shinn backed up Weber by saying that trading 6-foot-9 All-Star power forward West was "very unlikely." West will make $9 million next season and has three seasons left on his contract. However, Shinn wouldn't say the same about 7-foot center Chandler, whom the Hornets attempted to trade to Oklahoma City at the trade deadline. Chandler failed a physical and was returned to the Hornets. Chandler will make $11.8 million next season and has two more seasons left on his deal. Three-point gunner Peja Stojakovic also was mentioned as a trade possibility.

Give Peja Stojakovic away if possible, keep Chandler and West, try to find a bargain defensive swingman (or three) and hope at least one of them develops some magic with Paul.

it's not possible.
his contract is AWFUL

that being said- with the economy being in such trouble-
I'd think Stern would try and do SOMETHING to lighten the burden
of the individual teams- by say either waiving the tax (or cutting
in in half) or allowing them to pay it out over time....

Because if a team like the hornets will have to be broken up
It simply is NOT good for the NBA- especially when one of their
biggest stars is on those type of teams.

Another option is going back and revisiting the buying out
of a player as they did a few years ago- when it wouldn't count
against the cap-
NY did that with Jerome Williams-
This might help ALOT of teams

Meanwhile...IT'S LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

May 9, 2009  10:19 AM ET

Personally I hate the idea of watering down the team in the name of salary cap space. If the Hornets can acquire a suitable replacement, moving Chandler might not be a bad idea. Problem is: who would be considered a suitable replacement? At this point, quality bigs are few and far between. If they want to compete, David West should be untouchable.

Tyson Chandler is a bum! New Orleans should be trying to trade him because he sucks. But if they want to trade West they should check out the bulls. We'll toss 'em Ty thomas, then every assist the Paul gets will have to be a lob to Chandler and Thomas.

Not yet it ain't. Houston has established that they can win in LA. The Lakers need tomorrow's game.

May 9, 2009  11:11 AM ET

With the way Oklahoma City let the whole world know about Tyson Chandler's chronic foot injury I'd be surprised if the Hornets find another taker. Peja's contract is humongous plus he's old. That makes David West the victim of circumstance...

May 9, 2009  11:16 AM ET

What happened to these guys? Their roster is virtually the same and Paul has continued to play at a very high level. Was James Posey that big of a bust?

Hllywd, the rust is off. It took one game (Game 1) and now we're back to playing championship-caliber basketball. Three plays last night let me know that we've regained our focus. First of all, the dunk by Odom off of the opening tip. That set the tone offensively from the start. Secondly, the steal/recovery of that loose ball by Farmar and then the assist for the dunk by Ariza. That let the Rockets know that the game was going to be grimy. Finally, the three by KOBE to end the 3rd quarter. That reminded everybody that the Black Mamba IS STILL, the best player in the NBA. He wants the Finals MVP more than he ever wanted the regular season MVP. Believe dat!!!

Arejay, great recap! After Fisher took out Scola my concern for this team drifted. They are ready to play now.

Just as predicted Farmar's pace is much better suited against Brooks, Kobe is gonna keep making them pay for the one-one coverage on the perimeter, Gasol again played well on the defensive end, and if the 3s can hit threes after they converge on Kobes drives this team bring on Denver.

For quite some time I respected your insight into the game. But every now and then you floor me with some of the most insane comments. Please explain how ANY positive could come from dealing West.
