Mavs considered protesting Nuggets win

There were 62 fouls in the Mavericks' Game 3 loss to Denver on Saturday. The 61 that were whistled, and the one the NBA said should have been called. It's the last one that will forever haunt the Mavericks. After Denver's 106-105 victory at American Airlines Center, they were adamant the non-call that allowed Carmelo Anthony's winning 3-pointer cost them the game and, probably, the series. The Nuggets took a 3-0 lead and can complete the sweep Monday. The Mavericks considered protesting the winning play but elected not to. It was a bad call that got them, which the league acknowledged two hours after the game. Mark Wunderlich was the referee closest to the play, but he swallowed his whistle.

Yeah good luck with that.

Mavs = whiners. Just like their punk owner.

May 10, 2009  09:24 AM ET

Protesting how? Refuse to play game four? I guess they have nothing to lose (aside from the series they are guaranteed to lose anyways).

Once again Stern has done his part of ruining the game he believes he is trying to promote. Stern should have learn from the Donoughy case last year that he needs to make the officiating more consistent, fair, and unbias. Stern's grading system of officials is not working and he hasn't shown anything to prove to the public that they are using the system that makes the officials accountable.

The Mavs were done by bad officiating in the 2006 championship by Salvatore calling fouls that weren't fouls. Yesterday, the Mavs were done by an obvious foul that should have been called but not called lead by the Salvatore crew.

The NBA should go back to 2 officials like what they had in the 70's and 80's. Those officiating in the 80"s were so much better then these 3 officials on court where they are undecided on when and what to call.

You may call it griping but everybody gripes even the best players in the world. Lebron, Kobe, DWade, Duncan, Shaq, Jordan, Bird, Magic, Barkley, Robinson, etc all of these players gripe especially if the calls don't go their way.

May 10, 2009  10:08 AM ET

David Stern needs to get involved here. Allowing the officials to police themselves simply isn't working. I predicted the Mavs to lose in 5, but this isn't what I had in mind.

For the most part the ref's will not call a foul in the closing seconds of a game, play it out.
Ya it was a foul. But then they would complain if a call was made in a different situation.

Bottom line the Mavericks should not have let the game get that close.

Yes, the Mavs should have not let this happen but officials still has to do their job fairly. You say that officials will not call a foul in the last seconds but yet touch fouls are being called everytime Melo and Billups touches the ball.

If you want an intentional foul why not use your arms and hands?!!

I can't cry many tears for the Mavs. They had plenty of chances to put that game away.

Antoine Wright gave up on the play, was counting on the ref to call a slight bump, was unforgivably passive. He just gave 'Melo an open three, didn't stay in front of him after the foul was not called. Manifested the loss with pessimistic play.

May 10, 2009  10:25 AM ET

Stern needs to change the mindsets of these officials. These officials have the mindset of Jeff Van Gundy where fouls in the first 3 quarters are called but the last quarter they swallow their whistle or they have preference for star players. Calls should be the same in all quarters.

Stern and Stu Jackson needs to be fired.

Mavs are simply over matched this season. Time to get busy and retool for next season. They still have a good nucleus.

this season ?
they made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs....
and are getting beat by a HOT denver team

May 10, 2009  11:17 AM ET

So here's a plan to simplify the game: With intentional fouls being such a large part of the game, why go to all the trouble of actually making the foul and hoping the ref sees it? Just give the players whistles and let them call fouls on themselves :-). Less chance of injury that way...

May 10, 2009  11:24 AM ET

Fug a protest by these wanna be thugs marshmellows.
Point blank period if they had lead by 5 points or more in the last few seconds they would have won the game.
Fine and suspend Cuban for assaulting a camera man!

Plus, if 'Melo hadn't knocked down the three at the end, we wouldn't even be listening to these whiners complain about the situation, even tho I think it was a foul.

May 10, 2009  11:31 AM ET

it was a bump that they didnt call and then antoine wright just stood there. that isnt how you foul someone intentionally, you wrap them up. and then he just watched carmelo take the game winner instead of at least contesting it hard, especially if you are trying to foul someone. and their not even mentioning how they blew a lead in the last seconds, this was a loss by the mavericks because they were the team with less talent and less intelligence then the denver nuggets.

May 10, 2009  11:36 AM ET

So if Wright is purposely trying to foul Melo, why did he throw his hands up in the air almost as to say "I didn't touch him"? He should have wrapped up Melo if he wanted to foul him, instead I think he was trying to steal the ball, not commit as obvious of a foul as he is now claiming.

May 10, 2009  11:40 AM ET

Melo hasn't been getting calls all year, why start now?

Dirk, Howard, and Terry. That's all they need to build around. Sign Raymond Felton, resign Bass and Hollins. Draft Sam Young. Then make this trade...
Dallas gets: Nick Collison, Chucky Atkins, Earl Watson
LAC gets: Erick Dampier, JJ Barea, Dallas 2nd Round Pick
OKC gets: Chris Kamen, Matt Carroll, Mardy Collins

C - Nick Collison, Ryan Hollins
PF - Dirk Nowitzki, Brandon Bass
SF - Josh Howard, Sam Young
SG - Jason Terry, Antoine Wright
PG - Raymond Felton, Earl Watson

You can't tell me this team won't get back to the 2nd round?

May 10, 2009  11:53 AM ET

no comment, I'm a big mavs fan, and I know its a foul, but I have no comment.

Do you read the article or just headlines and your prejudice? It says... "the Mavericks considered protesting the winning play but elected not to."
