Gomez's future as Ranger unclear

When the Rangers gather this week for their organiza tional meetings at Glen Sather's digs in La Quinta, Calif., you can be certain Scott Gomez will be front and center on the agenda. It doesn't matter if you or I believe that Gomez can bounce back from a disastrous season that was by far the worst of a productive nine-year career, it only matters whether John Tortorella believes the 29-year-pivot can carry the 22-23 minutes a night that come with first-line responsibilities. The contract will be secondary in the decision-making process, though it will be a paramount consideration and considerable obstacle should the Blueshirts attempt to trade Gomez rather than commit to him as a piece of the foundation.

His future as a Ranger? Like the back end of this excerpt says, his contract will be the decision maker in this instance. Who wants a $10million a year player who scores 60pts a year? Who would want to cripple their cap space long term like that? Glen Sather is the GM of this team, so its not like they can trade him to the Rangers, haha. I'd be very surprised if Gomez isn't a Ranger for the duration of his contract/career. I knew going into his free agency he was the msot overrated player in the league, and I was right. Now he's not really overrated, just overpaid.

He's not a $10 Million dollar player, his contract had a declining rate, therefore a small market team may want him the last couple years of his contract when he still counts as $6.5 against the cap, yet only costs them about $3M and $2M for each of the last two seasons.

That said, he is not a front line star player, he's a supporting playmaker to a goal scorer. He might put up big assists/points with someone like Rick Nash, Ilya Kovalchuck or Alex Ovechkin, but he is too one dimensional offensively (can't score goals).

A laughable contract makes him untradeable. Same deal for Drury and Redden. Sather made huge mistakes inking these three to such ridiculous deals. Gomez has never been more than a point/game player, never a leader, more of a complimentary sort. In Jersey, he always could hide behind the leadership of Stevens, Brodeur, Guerin, Daneyko, others.. I knew he would shrivel in New York. Same for Drury. The guy starred early in his career playing with Forsberg, Sakic, Foote, Roy.. then was a leader on a young, unproven team in Buffalo which inflated his stock. Both Gomez and Drury would be great #2 line players, but not good enough to be stars on any team. Redden has been done for a few seasons now, soft as they come, overrated even in Ottawa, as Chara was their horse and Phillips more consistent in both ends. Markus Naslund was a bust as well.

Sather has not done a good job in New York, patching a team together with bad contracts that lacks leadership and overall grit . When a team has to bring back the cancerous Sean Avery to fill a "leadership" role, doesn't that say enough about the team's makeup?

Who wants that contract?

May 10, 2009  10:21 AM ET

The Wings have 5-6 people better than Gomez playing for less... can't see him staying with NYR at $10m per year

May 10, 2009  10:28 AM ET

Maybe it's Sather's future which should be unclear.

He won't, he'll stay, but he or no one else in the league is making $10 Million a year.

Gomez is not a bad player and a good guy off the ice. A little overpaid maybe in an overpaid NYR system where he cannot get much identity. A change of scenery will help.

Isn't AO getting close to $10 MIL. Gaborik will surely ask for sth like that on the FA market...

The contract Gomez signed paid him $10 Million in the first season, the same is true with Daniel Brierre, and both contracts steadily go down each year, with the last couple of years dropping sharply.

Ovechkin will be getting $10 Million a year starting about his 10th season until his 16th season, all in all it is a cap hit of something like $9.52 Million.

with a salary cap season you really have to be wise with your money. Although the rangers needed to improve the off-season they signed drury and gomez, sather hsould not have spent money just because he had it. SOmetimes it's wiser to hold onto your money for bigger and better things.

Sorry, but that's not accurate. His cap hit is 7.3 million and his salary the next five years (to finish the contract) are (in millions) 8, 8, 7.5, 5.5 and 4.5.

People have said the Pens have too much money committed to a couple players, but over th next 2 years, would you rather have Gomez and Drury at 16 million or Crosby and Malkin at 18 million? Has to be the no brainer of the century.

If ANYONE says they would take Gomez and Drury, please please please let me have that TD.

Sorry, I was thinking of Brierre, well thought Gomez was pretty close to his.

Let's go. TD time! (KIDDING!)

The Rangers are a gong show operation. The salary cap will be rolled back cause the league suffered a loss. They signed Gomez to a crazy contract that is not movable. They can buy him out but it will count towards the cap.

Tell that to Mats Sundin.
