Collins front-runner for 76ers job

Doug Collins appears to be the front-runner for the 76ers head coach job because he has, tentatively, expressed interest in the job. That's more than most folks. Also in Collins' favor is a family tie to the city and, more than likely, the backing of swingman Andre Iguodala, who grew up a Chicago Bulls fan when Collins coached there in the late 1980s.

I didn't know Iguodala was such a huge Bulls fan at 3 or 4 years old when Collins was coaching the Bulls.

Well... now you know :)

Again-
what in the world is the fascination with Doug Collins?
he's accomplished NOTHING in his coaching career that
would warrant discussion about his 'availability'

He's a career 500 coach (slightly above)
and hasn't won a playoff series since the 1980's
- I mean you're telling me he's the 'best available guy'? ????
- that's disgraceful

May 10, 2009  11:06 AM ET

I'm coming to belief this is a stoooopid story.

Isnt Collins also the guy who Jordan said "Get him out of here!" and then promptly won six championships a week later? What does that tell you?

Doug Collins...the Pete Best of NBA coaches.

"Get me Collins in here. We'll draft that youngblood Brown with the funny first name and ditch this bum Hamilton and then we'll show that Phil Jackson a thing or two!"

May 10, 2009  12:23 PM ET

Not only is he the guy that Jordan said "Get him out of here!" Grant Hill,of all people got him fired when he coached the Pistons.I put him and Mike Fratello in the same boat.Guys on TNT who can break a game down and discuss strategy. And when they coach a team, they win games, but every year you know they're just taking a slot in the playoffs and they won't be winning a championship.
(And if Jeff Van Gundy hadn't taken the Knicks to the finals in 1999,I put him in that group too)

May 10, 2009  01:00 PM ET

Weren't the Sixers 'reportedly' talking seriously to Eddie Jordan last week? What the hell happened there? Just when I thought Phily was making a good move.

May 10, 2009  01:01 PM ET

He's nothing special...get someone better!

I totally knew that.
What I did NOT know, however, was Iguodala swearing to himself in his baby crib every night that when he grew up one day, he would support Doug Collins to coach him and the Sixers! While an infant, He also did some mind bending on his parents to give him same initials as the once- lengendary Sixers franchise player! Jk.

collins was FIRED in 88-89

Yeah- I'm sure a 4 year old paid close attention to the coach
and not some minor ballplayer named michael something

You should check your facts. In no shape or form were the Bulls during Collins' tenure a championship caliber team. It was a big surpise they ended up in the Conference Finals, and for that he got canned.

Then with the Pistons, they were a TERRIBLE team when he arrived and with the help of Grant Hill, he was able to make them a powerhouse as well.

It's easy to win championships when you have Shaq in his prime and a perfect cast of role players (which included Kobe, because that's what he was for those teams), it is a lot harder to win with average talent or talent that hasn't hit its peak yet.

doug collins: good broadcaster, excellent analyst, average coach.....

Hahaa...yup, Iguodala had his eyes not on (Micheal who?) but on Collins already. Talk about 'precocious', right? It is all part of AI Divine plan. : o
Seriously, Trust me.

May 10, 2009  03:35 PM ET

Why don't they ask Peter Vecsey's opinion of the NY Post about Doug Collins? He has written few good pieces about him.

May 10, 2009  07:20 PM ET

But that doesn't matter because Collins didn't win. That's a tired argument.EVERY NBA team has talent. Some teams have more talented players than others, but every team has talent.
The coach is supposed to develop that talent as well as win games. And I seem to recall that the Detroit Pistons beat the Lakers for championship not too long ago.And the Lakers not only had Shaq and Kobe, but Gary Payton and Karl Malone too.Four future hall of famers.Laker teams in the 60's who were thought to be more talented than the Celtics, would lose to Boston in the finals EVERY time.As a matter of fact, more than half of Boston's championships came at the Lakers expense(9 of them). And the Lakers were loaded with Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. And the Celtics even beat the Lakers WITH Wilt Chamberlin. So did the Knicks.

And that so called Piston powerhouse team.Well....Joe Dumars traded Grant Hill to get players to build the team that beat the Lakers.
