Did Chizik beat Meyer to high road?

There's a right way and a wrong way to handle things, and Birmingham News columnist Kevin Scarbinsky says Auburn's Gene Chizik has an edge over Florida's Urban Meyer, at least in the way in handling criticism. While Meyer has made some missteps, Chizik has handled himself with class. ``It's just another example, like the quality staff he assembled and the innovative way he dispatched them on the Tiger Prowl, that Chizik so far has outperformed his reputation,'' wrote Scarbinsky. The punch line to Scarbinsky's column: ``Of course, this isn't the first time Meyer has come up short in comparison with an Auburn coach. Remember, on the field, he was oh-for-Tommy Tuberville.''

I am sure Chizik is a nice guy, but honestly who cares how he handles criticism? Chizik went to Iowa State and took a bad team and made them worse. Do you know how hard that is to do? It is yet to be determined, but using Florida again, Chizik is Auburn's Ron Zook, the Florida one not the Illinois one. He has no margin for error. He loses then the calls for his head start immediately. After running Tuberville, they better make sure that they win now or you will see another coach in a couple seasons.

Personally, I have no fight in the SEC, so if I am wrong then fine, but personally I would rather have the coach that doesn't handle criticism well, but wins National Titles over a coach that handles criticism well but makes a team worse.

If High Road is the street where all the top recruits are then yes he did.

How far has SI sunk that this could be considered news? STEP YOUR GAME UP!

May 10, 2009  02:32 PM ET

I know that it's mothers' day, but surely this post should have more than four comments in the thread by now.... Yak factors include Chizik, Meyer, Tuberville, SEC, Auburn, Florida, "high road," coach comparisons, and an "0-fer."

Not news, but a taunt to many who regularly peruse and post to T&R.

OH MY GOD! As a Birmingham native I am absolutely embarassed for my town that the words of that idiot Kevin Scarbinsky would ever find their way to this website! This is a stupid article too. The Tiger Prowl was a stupid idea. Bama just got a commitment from one of the top o-line prospects in Georgia (here's a link http://blog.al.com/bamabeat/2009/05/ol_jawuan_james_commits_to_ala.html ) and we did *gasp!* without pulling up in an obnoxious stretch limo. Who has Auburn gotten yet?? I'd be very careful about heaping any sort of praise on a coach that just came off a TEN game losing streak!

The AJC has Mark Bradley. Hot Clicks had a link to a video edit of a Cleveland news anchor calling him out to fight. I never got the "L" on the forehead thing until that moment, captured now for unlimited replays on YouTube. Mark "Pablum" Bradley vs "Mr. Bluster Cleveland." The headliner for that card? Middle school kids compete to see which team can safely remove the most ticks from stray dogs. Coverage at 10.

Does anyone think Chizik looks like he grew up in Southern Alabama? Pratville, maybe? Dothan?

May 10, 2009  03:41 PM ET

Commiserate with me, brothers. There are no more mullets in my neighborhood. My neighbor down the street and his son (both having sported mullets as they should be) appeared today with fresh high & tights. Mothers' Day gift? The lady of the household was beaming. Hmm... maybe I can wheedle a couple of tamales from her (heaven's nosh).

Auburn goes above and beyond to keep their reputation, so that was a major factor in hiring the new head coach Chizik. But he only has this coming season to get away with losing after that he is gone if he doesnt produce.

Chizik played football at Florida as a LB.

May 10, 2009  06:57 PM ET

I don't understand the comparison. Why are they comparing Chizik and Meyer? And why are they comparing them based on how they handle criticism?

May 10, 2009  10:24 PM ET

There is obviously some jealousy displayed by the Birmingham News. Too bad the reporter did not follow Chizik's example.

May 10, 2009  10:39 PM ET

Meyer is '0 for Tuberville' but so is Auburn. What's the point?

You put this into perspective nicely.

I mean I was sooooo shocked to read that an columnist for an Alabama Newspaper said something negative about Florida's coach. What's next in these troubled times... A Ney York columnist saying something negative about the Red Sox (or the Yankees for that matter....)?

A typical response from a typical Univ of AL, Tuscalooser, football fan. TigerProwl, whether thought it was great or not, did generate a lot of postive publicity for the school. And if your reading comprehension level was that of a fifth grader, you'd recognize that this article was about the way Meyer responded to Kiffin's recruiting accusation compared to how Chizek repsonded to Meyer's accusation. If Scarbinsky's article was full of damnation for Auburn and Chizek, you'd be calling him the greatest sports writer in the South. This has nothing to do with Alabama, so crawl back under your trailer and be a good troll.

<PSU grabs bucket of KFC and lays out a blanket. Checks watch a few times. He hopes the Auburn-Bama-Forida fireworks start soon.>

I was going to chastise my fellow Alabama fan, but you went ahead and did it for me, but then you had to get in a cheap shot against Alabama. I am unsure where you get your information on Tigerprowl, though, because when it was mentioned here, just about every fan from a school other than Auburn laughed at it. And the trailer remark. Please, sir, if anything Auburn has way more trailers than in Tuscaloosa. I have been to the city of Tuscaloosa and the town of Auburn and I know this for a fact.

Now, back to the original article. Scarbinsky is a tool, but he does get this right. Chizik has taken the criticism (well deserved on most points) with class. Meyer not so much. But, when you're winning NC's, it doesn't really matter whether you are a rude SOB or not. When you're 5-19 as a head coach, you'd better learn to take criticism well, which Chizik has done.

Carry on.

May 11, 2009  09:47 AM ET

5-19 (not May 19th, btw)

Innovative = firing a coach with a winning record (who Meyer was 0'fer against) and replacing him with a guy who needed DII schools to win 5 in two years, including 10 in a row. Better buy those limos, you're going to need them, often.

Yeah, Scab, Auburn and Chiz are on the high road, hope there's no drug test when they get there.
