Bucks eyeing in-state players

It's been more than a decade since the Milwaukee Bucks drafted a player from the University of Wisconsin. It's been even longer since they selected a player from Marquette University. But there's a chance one of those droughts could end on June 25, the date of this year's NBA draft. That's because the Bucks have more than a passing interest in two Marquette players -- Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews -- and one Wisconsin player -- Marcus Landry. All three of the aforementioned players are considered by NBA scouts to be legitimate second-round picks. And all of them will audition for Bucks officials later this month at the Cousins Center, the team's training facility in St. Francis.

Aren't they violating some rules by targeting players from specific schools in a specific region?

May 11, 2009  07:57 AM ET

They need to sell tickets.

May 11, 2009  08:12 AM ET

No difference than the Wizards or the Kings talking about drafting Blake if they get the first pick.

That's bull crap - on that note there should be an NBA team in every city and every team can only sign and draft players from their state... bye bye Yao, Dirk, Nash, Ginobli, Parker, Peja, Nene... the list goes on... matter of fact its not a bad idea - NY will have the best team..i'm down for it :)

so the point of the article is to tell us that the Bucks
master plan is to target 2nd round talent ???
oh- thanks

May 11, 2009  10:12 AM ET

why don't they worry about talent, not where the kid comes from. ask charlotte about drafting a local kid named sean may.

May 11, 2009  10:41 AM ET

Its the bucks....Its Milwaukee,Wisconsin not exactly the mecca of basketball.. so who cares really???

May 11, 2009  11:22 AM ET

I think that the bucks goal should be to trade Andrew Bogut to Utah for Carlos Boozer and FEZ and then trade rj to new orleans for tyson chandler a mo peterson

May 11, 2009  11:26 AM ET

Folks are wondering if I'm going to show my face. Despite our loss...IT'S STILL LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

May 11, 2009  11:33 AM ET

I thought they would be more worrited about keeping Villanueva than who they are going to draft in the second round.

May 11, 2009  12:49 PM ET

Basically they are going local in the second round. Thats it?

what r u talking about?

May 11, 2009  04:11 PM ET

They have done this for years. They tried out Mike Kelly way back when. They had Mike Wilkinson in for a tryout. It's good PR, and they don't have to pay for the travel expenses.
