An NBA source said ex-Celtics guard Sam Cassell will accept an assistant coaching job within the next two weeks, having come to terms with the fact that his playing days are over. Another NBA source said the Wizards were hoping to hear from Cassell soon in hopes of solidifying new coach Flip Saunders's staff, whether it's with him or going in a different direction.

I think it's a good hire if it happens. He's won everywhere he's gone.(even with the Clippers for one year.) Championship experience, three rings.(two with Houston, one with Boston). Will this propel him to a head coaching job someday? (if he wants one) Who knows?

Ewing and Casell will form a good combo in Washington - this is of course based on the assumption that looks don't matter.

May 11, 2009  07:50 AM ET

Would definitely help in Washington. Getting rid of Gilbert will also help, but I won't go there just yet haha.

lol....

Am I the only one who really couldn't care less about sam's future
coaching plans ? I mean- good for him if he wants to coach- but
he doesn't have the WOW factor as if a superstar went into coaching

Like sam I could sell E.T is a demand as a coach now?
Thats one ugly face to give you directions daily!

Exactly what the Wizards need on the Flip Saunders staff is a zero defense, how many shots can you take coarch to work w/ the zero defense, how many shots can I take agent zero. That's a match made in Fantasy heaven but NBA hell.

Ha, looks haven't helped Del Negro not become an incompetent coach.

let him go to Toronto so it can be Alien vs. Predator. (Cassell vs. Bosh)

A rookie coach with a rookie point guard took the defending champions to game 7 and multiple overtimes... you get what you pay for... matter of fact I think he's over achieved. Looks won't do the job for you but it will sure get you through the door.

A more competent coach would have won that series. So many misses opportunities in that series due to incompetent coaching: Running out of timeouts Game 1+2, not doubling Pierce, awful defensive coverage on Allen, etc.

Folks are wondering if I'm going to show my face. Despite our loss...IT'S STILL LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

May 11, 2009  11:33 AM ET

Is this a gossip girls or sports? come on why discuss how he looks? discuss if he's going to be a good coach or not!

May 11, 2009  11:52 AM ET

A good situation for him (Cassell). Flip is an execellent coach, Cassell played for Flip in Minnesota, and Cassell bring championship experience. Working with guards should help to make the Wizards that much better. Flip and the Wizards are a perfect fit, now, if only they can keep the players healthy and end up with the first pick.

It doesn't really matter. The coaching staff of the Washington Wizards is only there on an interim basis. In a year or so, they'll be fired when the Wiz finish in the basement...again.

Dude, you gotta be kidding. With the exception of last year, the Wiz crew had been in the Playoffs something like 4 straight years. They have a decent nucleus of players, but they tanked out (possibly intentionally) last year to improve chances for a high draft pick. What part of the last 5 years makes you think this team is a perennial basement dwellar. Speaking of which, step out from your mom's basement, the sun is shining today!!!!

*dwellar?

I apologize for my omission of a question mark there, will do better next time.

May 11, 2009  12:50 PM ET

I think he could be a good assistant head coach. For some reason I do not see him as a head coach, though.

While the Wiz have made playoff appearances the previous 4 years, they've never improved. Their record the last 4 years has been 43,41,42, 45. The objective is to position yourself to compete. Apparently it is you that has been in your Moms basement for about 30 years. The Wizards haven't been relative since the 70's.
