08:32 AM ET 05.11 | If the Avalanche is seriously considering bringing Patrick Roy back as a coach, the widely acknowledged greatest NHL coach ever believes it might be a good move. "I think he has enough experience now and deserves an opportunity," said Scotty Bowman, the NHL's all-time coaching victory leader and current Chicago Blackhawks executive. "I know he has the passion to coach. He's done a good job in junior." On Sunday, however, fresh doubt was cast on whether the Avalanche will offer a coaching job to its former Hall of Fame goalie. Roy told the Quebec City newspaper, Le Soleil, that he would be interested in the vacant head coaching position of the other team he played for in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens.

Will he still jump over the lines on the way to the players bench or during practice?

May 11, 2009  09:52 AM ET

I'm not saying he would be good or bad as a NHL coach, but the bigs are different than junior hockey.

May 11, 2009  10:06 AM ET

Why not make him an assistant coach first along with Granato (whose contract still has 2 years) to help him learn on the spot the transition to the big league?

Because I'm fairly certain that he and Granato don't get along at all.

This is quite a story. I wonder where it'll take us next.

So Roy would prefer a job with his 'other' former team...? Interesting. Would Gainy prefer another inexperienced coach behind the bench again also?
BTW...WT...Does Roy actually really ever get along with anybody?
One of the things that bothered me about Roy throughout his playing career...is there was always an air about him, that it was always about him...'egotistical', as a goaltender I suppose that could be an attribute that he could mask by his play and virtue of the position itself..but it may not make for the best coach who need to focus on team play.

I know of two people that he actually got along famously with. One was Craig Billington, one of his backups here in CO and the guy that is widely presumed to be the favorite for the Avs GM job. The other was Alex Tanguay, who lived in Roy's basement for a time and is now, interestingly, in Montreal.

Exactly. Look at Boudreau and Bylsma, both are doing a great job, but is it them or the team? Also, egos are about 100% larger in the NHL than in juniors, have to work totally different with the big boys.

I agree that he was very egotistical. Roy's ego is one of the main reasons I personally don't like the guy (and before anyone bashes me, I am entitled to my opionin). I hated the way he held his glove up all the time like he was the second coming.

Well, if your comment is suggesting that you like him for the coaching job WT...than I suppose that 3 is a crowd and I stand emended.

Why not just have a player coach. Let Sakic coach the team.

May 11, 2009  01:15 PM ET

please please please please please make my dreams come true and coach the habs.

May 11, 2009  01:35 PM ET

Damn. I thought I was done watching that prick.

He'd last less than a year. Way too volitile. He'd make Robbie Ftorek look like Scotty Bowman.

May 11, 2009  01:40 PM ET

Roy in Montreal would be a disaster. Too intense and too much scrutiny. He would definitely be overmatched. I mean, as someone else mentioned, coaching in junior is one thing. He gets responses from 17 year-olds because he is Patrick Roy. An NHL player is likely to tell Saint Patty to kiss his **** instead of revering the ground he walks on.

Roy will get a chance somewhere, but I would not hire him now.. a little too green yet.

I think that he'd make a good coach. I just don't know if he's ready to be a head coach yet. One thing about Roy is that he hates losing, probably even more than he loves winning, and he doesn't care what it takes to get there. That's what made him such a great goaltender. It'd definitely be fun to watch. I think that he'd get the most out of his guys. Otherwise, they'd sit on the bench.

May 11, 2009  05:00 PM ET

"otherwise they'd sit on the bench"

i think that's exactly what's needed. Look at Kovalev, they benched him a few games and he came back looking good and fresh again. Sometimes, it's what you need to do, and I think Roy would be more then willing to do it.

Now my real question is this : If Vinny Lecavalier were to wind up in Montreal, and Roy wound up as coach, how interesting could things get? Part of me says it could be REALLY good hockey, and part of me says it could be a disaster in the works!

Yeah, those "Dertoit" goalies are very intimidating. Especially when the city name is capitalized for emphasis.

That's a very intelligent addition to the discussion that you bring, thunderdragon.

Good point. Granato and Roy on the same coaching bench could probably lead to the first brawl involving coaches in the NHL... Interesting, my sick mind has to admit...
