Modano puts off retirement
Stars center Mike Modano took a month off to ponder his future and has decided to return for a 20th NHL season. Modano, who will turn 39 on June 7, already is under contract for next season but contemplated retirement. "It just didn't feel right to leave it this way," Modano said of missing the playoffs for only fourth time in his career. Modano said he expects the Stars to bounce back next season, and he believes he'll have a better season because of the team's depth. Dallas battled injuries all of last season, and that forced coaches to overuse him. He finished with 15 goals and 31 assists in 80 games, the second-lowest point total of his career when playing at least 60 games, and looked tired at times.

Glad to see Modano back for another year. Class act and one of my favourites.

Yes!!!!! Finally some good news today! Go Mo! What was Hull ever thinking when he believed he could have one of the real class acts of the league like Mo in the same lineup as ****very, the disgrace to an entire league...

Mike will further entrench himself into the history books and all-time franchise leader with another year under his U.S born belt...In twenty years it would be pretty tough to find a time that Mo didn't exude class and real talent.
Thanks for another year Mike.

In the same mold as Yzerman and Sakic, all three were young captains who stayed with one franchise their entire career (baring a shocking team change for Sakic or Modano). Joe and Mike both played with relocated franchises too.

I'm sure this decision would have been different if Avery was still with the Stars. Hopefully the Stars will make a deep run next year.

While I can understand his reasoning behind this decision, I don't agree with his belief that he will be better next year because of "team depth". The team isn't any different. Turco still doesn't win big games, Ribeiro is still a giant puss, Richards is still overpaid, and Modano is another year older. What in that equation equals improvement next year? Or is the goal to simply finish in the top 8 in the west? Modano is finished, and he doesn't have the defensive chops that Yzerman had to keep skating beyond his shelf life. Nothing against the guy's class, by any means, but its time for him to move into the office life before he becomes a Paul Coffey - playoff healthy scratch type of story. I'm not a fan at all, but it doesn't take away from what he has done, and I wouldn't want him to ruin his legacy for one more year, is all I'm saying.
And to whoever stated that he could pad his records with one more season - 30 more points isn't going to be that much extra padding.

He has the fire to keep going, one more year should be the icing on the cake though.

Well said.
The U.S. needs more stars like like to keep American youth interested in hockey. There are so many Canadian hockey legends but very few American ones that the general sports public has ever heard of.
