Growing pains for Pauley Pavilion expansion?

The color drawings depict a sleek, modernized arena, complete with terra cotta accents along the facade, a grand lobby and row after row of new seats. But as UCLA officials unveiled their vision for an updated Pauley Pavilion on Monday afternoon, filling in blanks about a proposed $185-million project, an equally important question lurked in the not-so-distant future. The university will look to trade choice seats for big donations, which could prompt some season-ticket holders to worry whether they will be pushed farther from the action. Athletic director Dan Guerrero said his department is trying to hone a point system that balances new donors with loyal fans who have stuck with the Bruins for decades. According to the current plan, work would begin on the exterior and the north side of the arena, with teams continuing to play there through the winter. The Bruins would have to relocate for the 2011-12 season.

Well, there goes the history.

Well, unfortunately that is just how it is with successful programs these days. The larger the donation the better the seat.

Not sure messing with Pauley is such a good idea, but these days money talks. Gotta keep the cash flowing. I think Guerrero will find a good balance with people who have been there forever.

Let's see-- UCLA AD has to choose between the loyal fans who have stuck with the Bruins for decades, or new fans who will give a lot more money to have the seats formerly held by those loyal fans.
I'm guessing money talks here, and loyalty gets rewarded with "thanks for the memories".
Same thing happened with my seats at Neyland-- they will be club/loge seating this year, with a price tag of $3000 per seat when ticket price and mandatory "donation" are figured in. Too rich for my blood.
I'm going to just get tickets from scalpers for most of the games this season, and maybe see where the Alumni Association can get me tickets for next year based on what I donate to the University. I think I'll come out ahead a good bit money-wise, since I won't be contributing to VASF any more. (End zone seats, here I come!)

Same thing happened at Allen Field House. AFH is considered a Mecca of college basketball but Kansas was amongst the bottom of BIg XII teams wghen it came to generating revenue for the athletic department. When Lew Perkins came in there was a huge uproar (with even legendary coach Phog Allen's family having to relocate) but a Bill Self hire, lots of great recruits, new facilities everywhere and a championship later, those complaints are less common.
