06:26 AM ET 05.12 | Former Red Sox infielder Lou Merloni has caused a bit of a storm lately with comments that the Red Sox taught players how to use steroids. This is a hot topic in Boston because former Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez failed a performance-enhancing drug test while with the Dodgers. Merloni, an analyst on Comcast's "The Baseball Show," had this to say Saturday: "I'm in spring training, and I got an 8:30-9:00 meeting in the morning," said Merloni, who was in the Red Sox minor-league system from 1996-97 and played in the big leagues with them from 1998-2002. "And I walk into that office, and this happened while I was with the Boston Red Sox before this last regime, I'm sitting in the meeting. There's a doctor up there and he's talking about steroids, and everyone was like 'Here we go, we're gonna sit here and get the whole thing -- they're bad for you.' No. He spins it and says 'You know what, if you take steroids and sit on the couch all winter long, you can actually get stronger than someone who works out clean, if you're going to take steroids, one cycle won't hurt you, abusing steroids it will.' He sat there for one hour and told us how to properly use steroids while I'm with the Boston Red Sox, sitting there with the rest of the organization, and after this I said 'What the heck was that?' And everybody on the team was like 'What was that?' And the response we got was 'Well, we know guys are taking it, so we want to make sure they're taking it the right way'... Where did that come from? That didn't come from the Players Association." Merloni said he couldn't remember the name of the doctor or what year the meeting took place. Boston's general manager at the time, Dan Duquette, adamantly denied the accusations to Boston.com.

"Merloni said he couldn't remember the name of the doctor or what year the meeting took place."

Well, if people take this story as absolute truth, then they must accept that Shane Spencer is absolutely true about A-Rod tipping pitches.

Merloni should write a book

wrong ****...that was before the current ownership

I seriously believe all teams are equally guilty. I mean, are there any teams that should be omitted from guilt?

The Player's Union and management are equally dirty on this one, let's just leave it at that instead of worrying who was "more guilty" than the next...

does this surprise anyone? the sox are as tainted as the Yankees.

Are there any members of the two Sox championship teams that were suspended for PEDS right after their world series win?

Are there any members of the Phillies that were suspended for PEDS right after their world series win?

Unfortunately, I won't be home today to read all of the excuses from the Philly fans. Too bad, I'm sure it will be good reading.

Of course Mitchell's biased. If he worked for the Red Sox, he'd have a loyalty to the team's history. This is their history.

May 12, 2009  07:31 AM ET

BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if most teams had their trainers or doctors go over the basics of peds with the players. They weren't banned at the time and sadly, in sports it's seems that all is fair unless you get caught.

Talking to yourself?

Two years ago everybody would have thought this guy was making this up, but after Canseco and McNamee and all their stories that all turned out to be true you know this is too.

Bottom line is that there will be a select group who will come in to this thread and just blast the sox about this. Just to get a rise out of us.. Kind of funny actually.

Every team over the last 15 years has had someone on their roster that was juicing, this should not be news. I cant wait for Shadenfreud to try and put a positive spin on this one for the red sux

The red sux? How old are you? 12? You should have left it after alone your first sentence. You would have sounded much smarter because you're right.

According to the book, The Yankee Years it did come from the players association and from MLB because there was, allegedly, the same type of meetings given at various gatherings.

Right on.

Except, of course, for the Indians -- they're a pure as the driven snow...

Says the guy who roots for a team that just won a World Series with the help of PEDs.

And save the "he got it at GNC" crap -- if he got it at GNC, then Manny was legitametly trying to get pregnant.

learn the facts, then come back and talk to me. BOTH THE UNION AND MLB SAID WHAT ROMERO TOOK WAS FINE. THEN THEY CHANGED THEIR MIND. Got it yet?
