Ex-Michigan QB gives Sheridan nod

Steven Threet started nine games at quarterback for Michigan in 2008. He has since transferred to Arizona State, but offered his thoughts on this year's quarterback race and the U-M offense. The competition is between veteran Nick Sheridan, freshman Tate Forcier, who participated in spring practice, and freshman Denard Robinson, who will arrive next month. If Jason Forcier, Tate's brother, becomes eligible as a graduate student, he also could enter the mix. Sheridan missed the second half of the spring after suffering a minor leg fracture, though Threet heard he was doing well. When Threet was working with Sheridan and Forcier in January, he saw the possibilities with Sheridan making significant strides and Forcier "seemed to pick it up well." Threet played his true freshman season under Lloyd Carr's pro-style offense only practicing and not in games. He said Rich Rodriguez's spread system is more conducive to the younger players meshing quickly. "It's a system that can be tailored to a guy that wants to learn it quick because you're not going to find the verbiage as in a pro-style system," Threet said. "Compared to the previous system we ran, this is easier on younger quarterbacks."

While I wish Steven good luck at A.S.U. and I understand his loyalty to Sheridan, I still have to say NO to this. Visions of horrible play by Nick Sheridan still lingers in my mind.

Better off rolling the dice, going with Forcier and Robinson and just hoping for the best (which in my mind would be 6-6, I'll take mediocrity after last season).

I believe the direction Michigan's (and Notre Dame's) season will take will be largely determined by the outcome of that game. It means more to ND because CW will not survive a 6-6 season where I think for RR that would still be a move in the right direction.

They should also consult with Terelle Pryor and Jim Tressel about their preference for the starting Michigan QB, too, just to add a little balance to the conversation.
My guess is Tate Forcier will be the guy, based on what I've read about him, but Rich Rodriguez has not consulted with me on the matter yet.

I spoke with Herbstreit just afew minutes ago and he told me Desmond Howard advised Sheridan will start the 1st 2 series and after he fuks_up they will bring in Tate or Robinson( if shows his skills once he enrolls)

Am I missing something? Is that not the full article shown above? The title implies that Threet said Sheridan should be the starter, but nowhere in the article does Threet say that.

This is all very early to be making any predictions. Tate had a fantastic Spring and was described by RRod as at or ahead or where he expected him to be. We haven't seen Denard. We haven't seen Nick play much in 2009. This is all very early. Threet is obviously gunning for his friend, but why does he still have the mike? www.michiganfootballblog.blogspot.com.

Another ploy by the editors of T&R. In my mind, Threet is saying that he believes a young guy can come in and play.

One of the freshmen will be starting before the end of the season if not from Day One. Athletically there is NO comparison between Sheridan and the other two.

Clarification please.

The finger you fly or the finger you lube and insert?

What if none of them are effective and this circus goes on for another year?

Speaking from a recent similar situation with the team for whom I root, I'd say that would be cause for widespread weeping and gnashing of teeth among Michigan fans.

My guess, if UM doesn't break .500 in 2009, RichRod becomes a "hot seat" coach - win in 2010 or get canned.

Lube? You are a gentle soul, aren't you. Ram and rip, blood lubes best.

The lube spectrum does include hot tar and sand.

Threet quit on Georgia Tech then quit on Michigan. Personally, I'd do the opposite of what he suggests.

May 12, 2009  06:23 PM ET

I would go with speedy Robinson
