Can Canucks keep Sedins & Luongo?

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis has some cold, hard decisions to make. His first challenge will be trying to resign Swedish twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin, who become unrestricted free agents July 1. Whether or not he reaches a deal with the twins could impact Gillis's ability to retain goaltender Roberto Luongo, who will make $7.5 million US next season in the final year of his contract. Daniel and Henrik Sedin were a bargain this year at $3.575 US million each. Daniel led the team with 31 goals while Henrik had 60 assists. They both contributed 82 points. Keeping the twins could cost a combined $12-14 million. If the Canucks want to keep Luongo they probably will have to pay him around $8 million US a season. His salary, combined with the Sedins, could be a strain on a salary cap that is expected to drop by the 2010-11 season.

If they try to sign all 3, they will end up like the Lightning and have all their money tied up into 3 players.

Thank goodness this salary cap has fixed everything!

So we are potentially looking at about 20 million for 3 players...what on earth will be left for Sundin? :)
I think the sisters may be on their way out of Vancouver...they are a package deal, which makes it tough on any team looking at signing them though. If you're the Canucks, who do you sign, Bobby Loo or the sisters or none of the above...all three?
Tough times at the table boys...good luck.

The Sedins will end up in Toronto playing for Uncle Brian. Toronto has a history of Swedish success (Hammerstrom, Salming, Sundin, Modin, Steen etc..) not named Ikea.

Burkie loves the twins. They will get 6 million each to play in Leafland.

The Canucks have to attempt to re=-sign Luongo as he is their franchise. The Canucks are in real trouble though as they will have to replace their best two offensive players.

Yeah...that and the booming economic climate.

The problem right now is that they never envisions the economy going cold like this and the cap having a large drop as it's going too.

The problem would still be the same if the cap continued to rise 5% every year.

They should trade them for the 2 Neidenfuehrers? Some playoff stones for 2 sweethearts? Maybe not as much life in Scott as they'd have with the sisters but they'd be better off while they have him. And Rob is gritty.

May 13, 2009  10:49 AM ET

The only way they can do it is follow the Detriot model with the money stretched out over long terms...ie Zetterberg and Franzen. But with the cap expecting to shrink after next season that still could be very difficult.

Simone Gagne and Joffrey Lupul for Luongo.

No love for Biron? Canucks need more grit and those two sweethearts aren't going to provide it.

But I like the premise. Not winning with Luongo so why not trade him. I say exile him to TB for Vinnie.

No, I've seen enough of Marty, Hank. And I think I would pretty much give up anyone but Richards to get Luongo. Goaltending has been the crutch in Philly for decades now.

I'd be after a goalie upgrade as well if I was a Flyers fan. But to get Luongo you need to pay more than that.

No No you mean Ottawa. Because we dont have the third player that we are tied to. Just two. One that is worth it (St. Louis) and an overpaid one (Lecavalier)

Of course. Where else would they want to play except where Inge Hammerstrom played? The problem is they will be paid 6 million each with a shrinking cap and they are not the superstars they need to be for that money. Don't think they will ever win a cup without a big gun to lead them and based on their projected salaries that can't happen.

May 13, 2009  11:33 AM ET

Did not Luongo say already that he is willing to take a big pay cut to play for the Wings so he can win a Stanley Cup?

May 13, 2009  11:53 AM ET

Send the twins to the Stockholm Red Wings ( HockeyTown USA ). Let's make this team entirely Euro!

May 13, 2009  12:37 PM ET

I actually believe that Burke will make an offer to the twins...he may be one of the only teams to offer them a deal as a package...lets not lose sight of the fact that as a tandem they become a lot more difficult to market themselves in the current NHL climate...Plus Burke has a history with the pair from his Vancouver days...That said, Burke is not about to blow the future or the budget on them either...
Luongo may like wearing the C...he still has a year on his contract, don't see him moving before the start of next season at the very least...

No, they are not superstars, but both had 82 points, which in today's climate are very good numbers. Toronto willcertainly look long and hard at them. As Baunded said, most teams will not have the cap space to offer a package deal. Toronto does and will.

I am not guaranteeing anything, but the Leafs have a decent shot, better than most.

That way if they ever make the playoffs Leafs fans can watch the sisters do little at big game time too.
