Fighting on rise in NHL

With a one-two punch goes the theory that there's no fighting in the NHL playoffs. The truth is there's much more fighting this year, with 31 fighting majors in the opening two rounds entering Tuesday night. In last year's four rounds, there were only 14 fighting majors, according to hockeyfights.com. The 31 majors, with two-plus rounds remaining, are the most since 32 in 2004. More than likely, the league will finish with more fights than any playoff season since 1994 (39), if not 1991, when there was a goon alert with 93 fighting majors. So what's going on? Perhaps Anaheim forward George Parros, who was third in the league during the regular season with 23 fights, has the best explanation. "I don't know for sure, but it's possible with the way the rules have changed (to cut down on goon-like behavior), you've got guys that can skate and fight," Parros said. "There's no longer the guys that are one-dimensional and can only fight and then they're out of the playoffs automatically because they can't play the game. "You've got guys who can play the game now who have a lot of toughness to their game, too. You see those guys staying in the lineup because of their skill set. All of a sudden they're getting in more tussles because there's more guys out there like them." In other words, in past years, the goons were removed from the lineup at playoff time because they were a liability in basically every other aspect.

Sorry, but I am not sad about this. I like the aggressive style of hockey, and I agree somewhat with Parros about the reason behind the increase.

That's probably a fair assessment by Parros. It's the way it should be. Guys having to answer the bell themselves instead of having some goons come out on the next shift to decide the matter after the fact. Hockey fights should be initiated out of spur of the moment emotional happenings...not some pre-arranged slug fest by a couple of slug heads...

Heck no! It's great. And Parros is dead on.

Agreed Baud-ed.

If fighting is spontaneous, I have no problem. No spectacle. No embarassment to the game.

And Parros is right. More players that can skate well, forecheck hard, play the body well are apt to toss the gloves and fight these days. These middleweights (like Scott Walker, Thornton, Hartnell, Malone, etc..) can be very effective players, and fight well too. The days of knuckle- draggers is almost over, as teams realize that paying a guy 2 million dollars or more/season to play 2 minutes a game is not reasonable.

And more broken bones in fights than I can remember.

I agree Parros is right about toughness and skating. Teams are asking more of even their skilled players to check and be physical, and thus tempers flare with the added grind. Just look at the Wings-Ducks game at the end last night--Rafalski and Dats wind up fighting, which isn't expected. Though I don't think either really wanted to go, but Rafi started getting wailed on and Dats caught a nice flying backhand from Niedermeyer.

I like pre-arranged contests between slug heads.

But this has been the best playoffs from a fight point of view in ages. I loved the end to last nights Ducks/Wings game. Watching Pavel get roughed up by Neidenfeurher. The elbow came out of nowhere on Pavel. Maybe it gives Datsyuk more motivation to break out?

I certainly hope so. It's not like he's terribly off, he's been dangling the puck and setting things up well--his pass to Lidstrom at one point was fantastic, but Holmstrom tipped it away from goal. Hopefully that elbow, and seemingly every Duck roughing his head up every time he had the puck, will make him angry and make him other-worldly tomorrow.

I'm not throwing out the cliched "Ducks are dirty" line, but what's with Getzlaf basically calling people a pusie at the end of the game? He hooks Hossa at the end (2 or 3 seconds left, wouldn't have made a difference), Hossa reacts to the tug and Getzlaf doesn't like that Hossa reacting to an actual hook, so Getz punches him in the face. As the guys at "Hockey Central" said, I think the Ducks were rubbing the game in their face. I hope they take offense to the end of the game like they took offense to Wisnewski's "gutless" comments and just tear them a new one like games 4 and 5.

Playoff hockey, isn't it great!?

It's the way the Ducks play. I said it before. They play hard. I like that in a team. Just as I like the way the Wings play, sort of a polar opposite.

Missed it by a smidgen in my opinion. When two heavyweights try to get their teams going in a scheduled bout it's a good thing.

May 13, 2009  11:08 AM ET

Like I've said before, If they eliminated fighting they'd have to eliminate body checking.

That would be next on the PC list.

Then they'd add the saw teeth on the front of the skates.

Next come the tutus...

I don't believe scripted fights get anyone going but the fans.

I think watching a teammate and opposing player have several hard shifts until it boils over and they drop the flippers and go at it is what pumps up a team, makes them want to go out and do their part of their team.

I have not played hockey but from what I have see. This is very accurate what you are saying.

Fans love fights. However scripted fights are just dull. When a player goes to fight on a defense of a teammate it fuels the team and the fans.

I don't know, I like all the fighting in hockey. Pre-arranged or otherwise. Sports are entertainment. Fighting is entertaining. Hockey + fighting = VERY entertaining.

Still disagree. When your big guy goes out and thumps the other team's big guy it can sometimes get you going. It has for years.

I don't think the fans care one way or the other how a fight starts. Fights are fights.
