Agent: Oduya is top-4 defenseman

Don Meehan isn't sure whether NHL teams will be willing to throw big money at Devils defenseman Johnny Oduya this summer, as they did with Brian Rafalski and Scott Niedermayer in the past. But the agent representing the 27-year-old Swede said Tuesday Oduya would be a top four defenseman on any NHL club. "He's a good player. He's a very good player," Meehan said from his office in Toronto. Among the upper echelon of NHL defensemen? "I think that's a difficult question to answer," Meehan said. "I would simply say he's recognized as a very good defenseman. Very able, very reliable. A top four defenseman on any team." Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello, of course, would like to re-sign Oduya before he becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. But whether Oduya will allow that to happen has not yet been decided.

Admittedly I'm not familiar with Oduya, but I'm sure he's top 4 defencemen who undoubtedly wants to go from being paid like a fifth or sixth defencemen to being paid like a top two defencemen. Couple years of that and suddenly you don't look so great when you are no longer a bargain.

I'd say Oduya is in the top 120 D-men in the NHL.

Recently over heard by unnamed sources...

Lou: "I'd like to re-sign him for next season Don..."
Meehan: "OH-DO-YA now..."

Wow, this could be a great Abbott and Costello bit if it was back in the 40's...

"I represent a top four defenseman in the league..."

"Oduya?"

"Yes, I do."

"No... Oduya?"

"YES! I DO!"

Now keep going for five minutes and you got comedic gold!

Oduya is no Rafalski or Niedermayer.

Maybe he can sign a four year 20 million dollar deal with Toronto because after all he's Swedish and the Leafs had Borje Salming and Inge Hammarstrom once..

im going to ask who ??????

going to look him up and prob laughf

May 13, 2009  01:26 PM ET

he can make some cash cause hes a offensive d man but they could replace him in a week

May 13, 2009  02:52 PM ET

Oduya is definitely a top 4 d-man on almost every team in the league. The problem, is that he is a low light player... as in he doesnt really score any goals (a la Green or Lidstrom) and he isn't physically imposing like Pronger or Chara. He just kinda goes out and does his job with intangibles.

Oduya? WHO IS THIS GUY! He's no Scott Niedermayer!
