Toronto denies Tampa trade rumors

Brian Burke went into quash mode on Tuesday. The Maple Leafs general manager shot down a rumor that he would send the Leafs' seventh overall pick in the NHL entry draft next month to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second pick overall and right winger Ryan Malone. The catch is Malone is under contract through the 2014-15 season at a salary cap hit of $4.5-million US for each of the next six years. "I have no comment," Burke said. "It certainly has not been discussed at our end." Two sources in Tampa also scuttled the speculation. "I would be shocked if that was the case," one source said. And about this request from the Lightning that Burke send it defensemen Luke Schenn and Tomas Kaberle and the seventh pick in exchange for the second pick? "The concept is absurd," Burke said. "I have said so to Luke, and am trying to reach Kabba to tell him the same." The idea remains that the Lightning will attempt to trade captain Vincent Lecavalier, who signed an 11-year, $85-million contract extension with the club last summer.

So the Leafs move up 5 spots and get Ryan Malone? This makes zero sense?

May 13, 2009  07:56 AM ET

Would the League allow that? The 7th overall for the 2nd and Malone?

Good question, maybe it's 2nd Pick and Malone for 7th Pick and Luke Schenn and Tomas Kaberle?

May 13, 2009  08:33 AM ET

It's okay, as long as the new owner of the second pick doesn't want to move it someplace it can economically survive. . .

This is the Sun reporting this mess. You get better facts out of a pathalogical liar in need of a fix. It is hard to see where any team is going to make a trade with Toronto to move up. However Burke is a creative guy so perhaps he has a 3 way deal in the works.

May 13, 2009  09:25 AM ET

I believe a trade will happen, probably with Kaberle and Malone as the principles. Tampa needs a puck-moving defenseman and the Leafs would deal him for the 2nd pick. Malone is on the books for 4.5 million for another 4-5 years, so the Bolts would love to lose that contract. Toronto would have to pick up another salary to prod the Bolts, someone making 2.5-3.5 million, so Tampa could realistically shave 7-9 million from it's payroll. The Bolts could then swap picks with the Leafs, still getting a prime-time player at #7. The deal is not bad for Tampa :

1) They shave almost 10 million from their payroll. This makes Lecavalier's deal a little easier to swallow.
2) They add an upper-tier puck mover in Kaberle - drastically helping their back-end and PP.
3) They still add a top-level prospect with the 7 pick.

Who knows what other details are to be added (prospects, cash, draft picks..) but this deal could work for both teams.

The Bolts are in serious financial difficulty. The Leafs are the richest organization in hockey who have some cap space = good chance of something happening.

If Burke swings this deal, can possibly entice the Sedins to come east... the Leafs would be right back in the middle of the pack in the east.

May 13, 2009  09:38 AM ET

This trade is absurd. Why would TB want to make this deal? They are in financial troubles. They hold the second pick which at worst leaves them a SWEDISH GIANT defenseman who will almost be better than Schenn from day 1 and will probably develop to me be far better than Kaberle....and of course he'll be cheaper.

May 13, 2009  09:42 AM ET

Burke won't do anything with the draft unless it somehow includes him getting his coveted player, Travares. That means he needs the number one pick.
The Islanders may anti it up for the number 2 pick, but Malone's deal is far too long & therefore would not be part of a deal.
No way Burke puts Schenn on the trade table. End of story. He now has proven NHL experience and is a fan favourite. Suicide for Burke to even consider it, which I doubt very much he is.
I could see them moving Kaberle as part of a 2 or 3 way deal though. But somehow it would to lead back to Travares in the mix...This should be a pretty interesting summer.

Agreed, they'd be right back in the middle of the standings (around 7th) for the next 4-5 years, at which point they will be right back in this position again.

In your scenario they would be receiving Kaberle (and his contract), so (without other moves) this alone wouldn't shave $7-9 Million from their payroll.

Malone is a great winger and gel-ed playing with Crosby last year. Tampa made him an offer he couldn't refuse and threw a ton of cash at him.
I argee that it will be Kaberle or Kubina (not both) that will go during their NTC trade windows this summer.
This deal makes a little bit so sence since the Leafs have cap space. But Burke will have to throw in someone other than Schenn. Maybe Ponikarovky, Stajan, Tlusty or Grabovski or a combo.

May 13, 2009  10:53 AM ET

That said they (the Leafs) need to move up to the 3 or 4 spot to grab Matt Duchene or Evander Kane.
They should have "TANKED" when they had the chance.

Why does every Leaf fan think the other teams want their GARBAGE?????
This trade rumour has no legs, but even if it did..TML would have to give up Schenn, mainly because he looks good because there is NOTHING else to grab.

Why would TB want any combo of the players listed?

Another Leaf fantasy. Contrary to what you guys believe in Leaf dreamland, there are a multiple problems with your fantasy.
1. If the Bolts decide to move Ryan Malone, he can be moved to a new team by including an asset alot less valuable than the 2nd pick of the draft. The contract is bad but it ain't Wade Redden bad...
2. If the Bolts are rebuilding they will not be targeting a 31 year old defenseman with 8.5 million dollars owed over the next two years. Plus in your math you never seem to account for adding Kaberles salary to Tampa.
3. The Bolts can better help their teams future and finances by trading Lecavalier and St.Louis for packages of young prospects and draft picks than by giving up the 2nd pick of the draft to move Ryan Malone.
4. The Sedins are not leaving Vancouver. And don't tell us about the Leafs history with Borje Salming that will convince them.
5. If all this does happen how are you going to pay the Sedins about 6 million each, Malone and your other highly paid ex Bolt 9 million and build a winning team? You're adding about 21 million in salary for Kaberle so thats plus 17. That puts you at the cap with a mediocre lineup. Nice rebuilding job. After Burke is done I vote Joe C the Leafs fan to be the next GM of the team. As you said they would be right back in the middle of the pack.

Does Everyone of your posts need to remind us how rich the Leafs are and which teams are in financial difficulty so the Leafs can take advantage of them. NEWSFLASH: The Leafs have always been one of the richest teams and in the league of the Poison Dwarf there are always teams in financial trouble yet the Leafs haven't sniffed the cup since 1967. What does that tell you?

My IQ has dropped 50 points out of hearing this story.

My team.

My TEAM.

Is willing to trade the second overall pick which we can get an amazing player and also trade one of the best players of the team to move down 5 places.

*puts gun to head*

The idiocy on this post is never endless.

*pulls trigger*

It tells me that the Leafs have not had a General Manager who has been given the latitude to completely run this team & its hockey operations until this year. So, in fact, the real re-building has just begun...it also tells me that others don't seem to have any problems reminding Leaf fans of their last cup winner in 67...So yes, the Leafs have money, more young talent than many might imagine, a coach that demands work ethic, when even when tanking this season might have served the future in a more concrete manner, and a General Manager with the freedom to do what ever he wants to do for the first time since that 1967 winner...

Thank you.

When this deal happens (or some derivative of..) I will respond with glee to Mr. bjz3.

I guess this B.S. is the only way the Leafs are ever going to be in the news in May...
