Rose: A-Rod still deserves Hall of Fame nod

07:55 AM ET 05.14 | Disgraced hit king Pete Rose said Wednesday that he believes steroid cheat Alex Rodriguez should be voted into the Hall of Fame. "I'm willing to give a guy a second chance," said Rose, who has been waiting for one of his own since being banned from baseball in 1989 for betting on games. Rose was inconsistent and erratic during a radio interview on "The Dan Patrick Show." Despite saying that A-Rod should be in Cooperstown, Rose said he believes that taking steroids is a worse transgression than a manager betting on his baseball team because juicing can have a direct impact on the outcome of a game. "That's integrity of the game," he said. Rose also said that Manny Ramirez should not get into the Hall. Ramirez is serving a 50-game suspension for for taking hCG, a female fertility drug frequently used to counteract effects of steroids. "Would I vote for A-Rod right now based on his record?" Rose said. "Right now, I would. Manny Ramirez? He's not quite there, but he'll get there."

Rose simply want precedent set. "Well A-ROD is in and he cheated. I just bet on my own team."

May 14, 2009  08:05 AM ET

Well, PETE ROSE is saying it/

May 14, 2009  08:06 AM ET

Now there's an endorsement...

May 14, 2009  08:08 AM ET

If A Rod was Rose he would still be denying he did anything with a needle hanging out of his arm. All Rose had to do was admit it, since he didn't bet against his team he would have been forgiven, he would have gotten a suspension and he'd be in the Hall already.
Another idiot.

"I'm willing to give a guy a second chance,"

Sounds like someone begging. Too bad he is too stupid to realize that just admitting it and saying he was sorry would probably let him in. Although, I don't think the old-timers that vote on the veterans committee want anything to do with him, given his silly grandstanding on induction weekend for the last bunch of years.

People who grew up watching him play would let him in eventually. The old timers are dying off, that's how Rice got in despite pizzing off everyone he came across.
Rice did a couple of events with a radio station up here (Charity stuff related to the Hall, Gossage was the other guest of honor) and you could tell he was trying to be nice but he still came across as an incredible tool. I still don't know why that should make a difference

Kind of like having John Dillonger co-sign a loan for Bonnie and Clyde.

Sports writers who got their feelings hurt. There is a guy in Boston that takes pride if he can "run someone out of Boston".

This makes absolutely no sense. What "record" of A-Rod's does he speak of? Is he referring to his statistics thus far? If so, then Manny Ramirez no doubt deserves to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I don't think Rose even knows what's coming out of his mouth with the verbal garbage spewing from it.

Charlie Hustle(r), one of the more contemptable characters in MLB in the last 40 or 50 years. I wonder if the veterans commitee will let him in once he's dead? Seems like the only way for baseball to acknowledge his playing accomplishments while saving face concerning his ban.
I just can'ty work up the same amount of loathing for Arod as I do for Rose. At this point I tend to feel sorry for the guy a little. It just seems like he tries too hard to be liked and comes off as a phony.

It's sad when writers are such tools that NY'ers and Yankees who HATED those Sox teams (Really hated, not this Youk/Joba, A Rod/Varitek little league crap) were screaming about Rice not being in.
Those teams in the 70's had real brawls. They started hating each other in the minors and brought it tothe majors.

At one point I thought Pudge and Munson were going to kill each other. Then again those Yankees were just as likely to kill each other.

it seems to me that a lot sports writers don't know that much about the game. perhaps b/c many never played it?

There is a display about his hits record.

A Rod comes off like a phoney because he is one. He brings it on himself for the most part.

It's the only way they can get their frustrations out. They're probably the same people getting banned from their kids little league games.

We have Jim Rice as an analyst for Red Sox TV coverage. I've always been a fan of his, but he doesn't come across as a very eloquent dude.
He has always had a reputation as a very serious man and I don't blame him one bit for telling the Boston sports writers to pound sand.
I had heard that he made some very gracious comments when Gossage was announced as an inductee.

my guess is that they were always picked last in gym for the kickball games. the anger festers over years and finally its payback!

I think a lot of them are about making themselves the story, not reporting on the story. The whole "curse" garbage in Boston was started by Dan Shaughnessy to sell books.

most of them are just arrogant windbags.

They both waited WAY too long to get in. One thing that probably pizzed off the writers was that Rice refuses to say anything negative about other players . God forbid they don't get their quote.
